As Europe has become culturally diverse as a result of migration, higher emotional intelligence in the society can play an important role in developing intercultural communication and respect towards each other. Intercultural implementation of new methodologies that enrich empathy, respect, self-awareness, collaboration, social engagement and international mindfulness, is one of the most effective forms of building emotionally intelligent societies. Furthermore, after the pandemic youth organisations have to overcome the global crisis by sharing mindful practices to develop powerful social and emotional skills and strengthen intercultural cooperation among nations. It is necessary that youth are enabled to develop a respect for their own cultural identity and values of others. This is exactly why we were inspired to gather young people from both Programme and Partner countries, in order to use a certain approach that supports youth to appreciate their own self-worth and of other's worth in their communities. Therefore, objectives of our project were: -To increase young people's emotional intelligence and encourage them to be more open to intercultural dialogue; -To promote skills, attitudes, and knowledge that help youth to identify and regulate emotions, to develop positive relationships and to make responsible decisions. -To enhance the cooperation between young people on an international level; -To develop a network of like-minded individuals and organisations ready to cooperate on future projects related to nonformal education; -To create a concrete plan for follow-up projects and activities focusing on emotional intelligence and intercultural learning. We wanted to organize this project to contribute to more socially inclusive and sustainable societies, promoting solidarity and respect, and seeking the elimination of violence and conflict between cultures or within the same culture. Working on emotional intelligence and mindfulness has positive effects on a person's mental health. Methodologies introduced at the youth exchange directly targeted emotional management and self-awareness of young people. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions, and those of the people around them. Unfortunately, in most countries working directly on emotional intelligence is not seen as essential in the full development of the potentials of youth. Most common approach towards education is dogmatic. Therefore, it was important to address this topic by non-formal education in a more intercultural environment to encourage young people to move from understanding concepts of emotional intelligence to examining their experiences from a mindful perspective and incorporating these concepts into their personal values and decision-making processes. This youth exchange acted as a starting point for partner organisations to explore social and emotional learning methodologies and further extend their collaboration in future. Using the techniques introduced at the youth exchange, young people developed a curiosity and tolerance, as well as the motivation to share this newly-gained experience among their peers. They developed skills and abilities that allowed them to relate to others, set goals, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts.
