Objectives

Creating self-expression and joy in one's life is important to health and mental well-being. We as humans learn to release negative thoughts and emotions by putting these emotions into productive and creative venues. However, many people with disabilities can have trouble communicating. Art and creativity helps those individuals to express themselves when communication is challenging. Through self-expression, young people with disabilities can immerse themselves in a creative activity that stimulates and energizes the mind, combats depression, and helps them to feel more in control of their life. However, programs for typically developing young people are not suited for every young person with special needs. Either the game cannot be played slowly enough, enough time cannot be devoted to learning the rules, adaptive equipment is not used, etc. To respond to such issues, partners have developed specific local programmes based on martial arts, as they believe that they are the best extracurricular activities a young person with disability can participate in. For young people with special needs the benefits are invaluable because of the inherent structure and discipline the arts bring to a youngsters’ daily life. The unique component of martial arts for young people with special needs is the competition within themselves, not with others. Young people with special needs must work on life skills, not competing with others for a trophy. Practicing martial arts helps people with disabilities learn they’re more capable than they think they are. Partners developed this project with the main aim to encourage self-expression of young people with disabilities through practicing martial arts. This project will stimulate focus and physical activity of participants, while generating a social connection and sense of belonging. They will also gain a huge sense of achievement. Project objectives are: To encourage self-expression of the participants (expressing own thoughts and, feelings) through practicing martial arts; To increase focus and self control of the participants; To increase mental strength of the participants which will allow them to tackle problems better; To foster better understanding of important character traits like integrity and courtesy; To help participants with their social skills and their ability to connect with other people; To increase intercultural competences of participants, the common values of tolerance and respect as well as the sense of common European identity; To increase knowledge of participants of Erasmus+ programme.
