Objectives

The project “Do you see us now?” is going to include 24 youngsters from Croatia, Romania, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Lithuania aged 17 to 21, accompanied by 6 team-leaders (youth-workers from each organization) in a 7-day youth mobility – a youth exchange that will take place in Veliki Žitnik, in Outward Bound Croatia’s education center. The project’s main topic will be the active participation of youth in society, using digital visual communication skills. The project was developed as a follow-up activity of the youth exchange project called “Together for a change”, implemented by Outward Bound Croatia in partnership with 3 non-formal education- and youth organizations in March 2019. Since the mentioned project showed a great impact on the participants (they continued developing their photography skills after the project, implemented great follow-up projects in their communities and continued being active in their sending organizations), the team-leaders suggested to implement another youth-exchange to further explore how developing digital skills (mainly in video-making this time) through non-formal education can empower youngsters to raise their voices for societal issues that matter to them and become active perpetrators of social change. The increase in digitalization of all aspects of our society and daily lives, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and crisis, brings the topic of digital youth work and the development of digital skills in youngsters with fewer opportunities as a means of empowerment and inclusion into social and professional life to a level of high-priority action. The main objective of the exchange is the development of various skills for life-long learning of the participants, of whom most will be youngsters with fewer opportunities. Using non-formal and peer-learning methods, the young participants will develop their IT and digital skills, especially in digital photography and video-making and editing which they will be able to use after the project without having access to any specific equipment other than a smart-phone camera and free software. They will also learn basics about the power of visual communication, especially through online media and in online social networks. With the facilitation of the team-leaders and in dialogue with the participants from other countries, the participants will explore what societal issues matter particularly to them as young people and how they can make an impact in raising the public’s awareness of those topics, especially using online communication channels. Taking part in an international mobility project will develop their personal and social skills, they will become more self-confident and gain trust in their abilities, they will develop their communication skills and ability to work together in a team, state their opinion, speak up publicly and defend their arguments. Especially their intercultural awareness and competence, their readiness for dialogue and tolerance for different opinions and perspectives will be fostered and their awareness about shared European values will be raised. The skills and abilities they will develop will empower them to become active members of their communities and contribute to making a change for the better as well as raise their own level of social inclusion since the included participants will themselves be youngsters with fewer opportunities (educational difficulties – dropouts, economic difficulties – unemployment, social difficulties – youth without proper parental care, accommodated in institutions, geographic obstacles – youth from rural and underdeveloped areas). The goal of the project is, therefore, raising youth participation and activity in society through digital channels, especially marginalized youth and youth with fewer opportunities and empowering youngsters to express their concerns for society and making their vision of necessary social change visible. Taking part in the exchange will empower and enable the youngsters to express themselves through visual content and making it visible through online channels. The goal of the project is also to make youth mobility projects and opportunities more visible in the local community of Gospić as well as in all participants’ home communities. The project will contribute to raising the visibility of the voices of youth in society and perceiving them as equally important and valuable opinions, as carriers of social change.
