Intercultural/intergenerational education and (lifelong)learning

Objectives

The project idea started during a previous youth exchange, when young participants from HU and CZ worked together in a session to develop project ideas. The initial idea and main idea of the project was to foster intercultural understanding using the art of filmmaking. The feedback from other participants was so good that we decided to apply the project. In a first part the project would focus on understanding the different cultures in cinematic expression, by presenting and discussing iconic national movies and in the second the participants would actually learn and try the filmmaking process. We presented the idea to partners from SK and PT who found the project idea very interesting and jumped right in. All 4 communities and target groups shared the issue of lack of intercultural exposure one way or another, either through geographical isolation or ethnically homogeneous populations. This lack of intercultural dialogue leads often to a distrust in strangers, a lack of tolerance, thus failing to achieve one of main goals of the European Union project: solidarity, peace and unity among people from different European nationalities, cultures and religions. Cinema always played an important role on political and social changes since its first days. It is the stories of great directors like Bela Tarr, Jan Kadar, Jakubisko or Manoel de Oliveira that form our thoughts, inspire us to develop critical thoughts, break stereotypes and new perspectives on various social issues. The 7th art is one of the most powerful tools when it comes to communication of messages and symbolisms. The way cinema is seen and produced by the new generations will have a key role in the building of a cohesive, united and solidary Europe. The project helped to raise the intercultural understanding of 54 young participants from HU, CZ, SK and PT, by fostering creative expression through filmmaking. It did so by organizing a YE, who took place in Pocuvadlianske Jazero, Slovakia, between 05-15.11.2022. The project also included 11 group leaders and staff. Objectives: 1-Develop the intercultural understanding and tolerance of 54 young participants from HU,CZ,SK,PT. 2-Boost levels of creative expression of the participants by developing their filmmaking competences. 3-Expose 54 participants and their communities to different perspectives increasing their levels of critical thinking. The objectives were in line with many of the objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme and the European Commission by: -“improving the level of key competences and skills of young people (…) to promote participation in democratic life in Europe (…) active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity, in particular through increased learning mobility opportunities for young people (…)” -increasing sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; -improving foreign language competences; -enhancing intercultural awareness; -fostering a more active participation in society; -increasing awareness of the European project and the EU values; -raising participants' awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries, offering them the opportunity to build networks of international contacts, to actively participate in society and develop a sense of European citizenship and identity; - promoting diversity, intercultural and inter-religious dialogue, common values of freedom, tolerance and respect of human rights as well as enhancing media literacy, critical thinking and sense of initiative of young people.
