By implementing the project "Step Out of Your Story", we aimed to provide a context for 40 young participants from 4 diverse communities from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Macedonia to engage in an intercultural dialogue through the non-formal method of storytelling. We chose this method starting from the premise that storytelling is more than a need to share stories. It is an art form as old as language itself. Human beings are designed to live by telling and listening to stories. From the earliest beginnings of history, the understanding of the world has been passed on through stories: myths, legends, and folklore tales. People think in stories, which helps them work collectively on a large scale. The experience of sharing stories with others bonds and unites communities and cultures, making it function as a whole and playing such an important role in people's lives it needs to be given more attention to stories. Exploring their meanings helps humans understand better the reality around them. Especially for young people, this is important because they are at a time when they learn about history only in technical terms, without understanding the general context, and so encounter more difficulties in understanding the present or anticipating the future. We chose this method as it can make learning more interactive and fun for young people. It stimulates their curiosity and openness towards new horizons. As experienced organisations, all partners have been using storytelling in their non-formal learning activities, which proved to be very efficient in the learning process. Therefore, the idea of this project came to life after recognising its potential and the request from young people from the partners' communities. They were very interested in exploring other cultures and understanding them better. Considering that the youth had limited opportunities to interact with people from other countries or even speak foreign languages with natives, the project empowered them to get involved in a transnational YE better to understand the present and diverse cultures through storytelling. Objectives reached by the end of the project are the following: 1. Facilitated an intercultural context in which 40 young participants from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Macedonia shared myths, legends and folklore tales to understand and express their cultures; 2. Raised awareness among the 40 participants (direct beneficiaries) and 100 young people aged 16-19 years old (indirect beneficiaries) from the four countries mentioned above on how stories shape reality; 3. Enhanced creativity among the 40 young participants by using the non-formal method of storytelling. It is important to mention that at the application stage, we had included a Czech partner that was forced to withdraw due to the enormous workload left lagging from the pandemic. The agreed-upon solution was to redistribute the participants with young Macedonian participants, as our partner had a reserve list. For all partner organisations, the project constituted an opportunity to improve their work at the level of the EU and increase the quality of the non-formal educational methods used in their activities. Following the 8th Youth Goal - Quality Learning supporting the young participants from their communities to get involved in transnational exchanges and increase their cultural understanding are two of the partners' main goals. The project was aligned with the EU Youth Strategy, addressing the following areas of action: • Engage: by unfolding opportunities for 'learning to participate', raising interest in participatory actions and helping the 40 young participants to prepare for their youth exchange; • Connect: Involved participants from 4 communities, including participants with fewer opportunities and offered them support measures. The project was closely connected to the objectives of the ET 2020: • Strategic objective #3 by encouraging the participation of participants with fewer opportunities, increased the active participation of youth and fostering intercultural dialogue; • Strategic Objective #4 of ET 2020 by enhancing the creativity and innovation of the 40 young participants.
