Objectives

The aim of the project was to organise a youth exchange with intercultural learning elements, where, in addition to the participation of young people from six countries, another aspect, which could be considered traditional, was also taken into account: the participating municipalities were each other's twin towns. The twinning meetings are organised each year by a different host municipality, so the starting point for this project was to host Veszprém. A trend at EU level has been observed in recent years that young people are less motivated to get involved in public affairs and civic roles that affect them, mainly due to the distance and sometimes mutual distrust between generations. It is also clearly visible in the municipalities of the partner organisations and the coordinating organisation that young people have fewer opportunities to meet their peers in their communities and to spend meaningful, quality time together. Therefore, an important aim of this project was to use community-building methods to organise youth exchanges, where interpersonal experiences and networking points were also an important focus, alongside intercultural knowledge exchange. One of the stated objectives of the project was to create a joint performance by young people using the tools of culture and artistic expression to end the youth exchange programme. As there are often gaps in intergenerational dialogue and active cooperation, and as value systems are changing rapidly and continuously, it was important for the design of this project to give young people involved in the project the opportunity to experience first-hand the implementation of grassroots activities at local level. Furthermore, the existence of a holistic, body-mind-spirit well-being was also an important element and goal of this project, so elements that would meet this aspect of well-being were included in the programme design. In the context of the cultural objectives, it was of particular importance that the youth exchange programme should be in line with the spirit of the European Capital of Culture of the city and region of Veszprém. Non-formal and informal learning activities were designed with the full and active participation of young people. When designing the aforementioned performance, it was important to ensure that it embodied the fundamental values of the European Union, in particular the concepts of democracy, freedom, equality and human dignity. For this reason, it was stated before the implementation that the creation of the performance would be based on the ideas and needs of the young people involved, and that each participant would take part in the element of the programme in which they felt comfortable and at ease.
