Objectives

Imagine yourself walking in Belgium or in Iceland glancing at the sky and searching for a particular star or star constellation. Being in Belgium, the massive amount of artificial light often fades away the beauty of the galaxy. Everybody there grew up with a lot of light, it's an addiction. Everybody needs to be enlightened. In Iceland this amount of light is much less, so a massive amount of stars will light up in the sky. Unfortunately, not as used to be, because of the growing urbanisation nowadays. Belgium represents that side of the axis where youngsters do not know a life without (overexposure) of artificial light, whereas the opposite holds for youngsters of Iceland. In Iceland the mountains have been spared of artificial light and what could potentially cause a massive amount of light is one of nature's masterpieces: Northern Lights ! A little group of Belgian youngsters came up with the idea of creating an exchange about LIGHT POLLUTION. This is because of the problems it brings to our earth nowadays and the big amount of light everywhere and always in Belgium. After talking to Veraldarvinir and finding some motivated youngsters we found out that we could broaden the theme of light pollution to three light related themes, so we also had attention to the beauty light can give and the metaphorical way we can interpret light - enlightenment. So, light is what we wanted to put in the spotlights and more specifically we tried to shed some light on the advantages of light (i.e. beautiful sceneries or critical reflection) and its disadvantages (i.e. light pollution). As such, we questioned ourselves. "Do you see the light?" and "Have you seen the light" at the end of the exchange. We are very happy to say that we saw the light in several options. More concrete we tried to enlighten the different aspects of (en)LIGHT(enment): 1. LIGHT BEAUTY: A positive attention to the beauty we have nowadays (light beauty such as astronomical and natural light) is very important. This positive view is necessary to find support and a motivation in the importance of environmental conversation. We are open to the beauty light can bring and it's opportunities. For this we tried to involve the inhabitants of Bolungarvik during workshops. 2. LIGHT POLLUTION: The physical aspect of light pollution such as astronomical (which obscures the view from the night sky) and ecological light pollution (which alters natural light regimes). As youngsters living at the coast, we define light energy as a natural pathway for light to reach our shoreline. However, light is more than that. We have natural light, such as coming from our Galaxy which is besides beautiful and also beneficial for nature. A second source of light is artificial light. And this kind of light disturbs natural light and the ecosystem (e.g. the light on the roads, parking lots,...). The effect that artificial life has upon organisms and on the structure of ecosystems as a whole is what is called "ecological light pollution" and what concerns us as youngsters. In Iceland e.g. this light change has a negative effect on the northern light and other fauna and flora. The introduction of artificial light is one of the most drastic human made changes to the earth. It is comparable to toxic pollution, land use change and climate change due to increases in the concentration of greenhouse gases. Still… up till now its damaging effects remain mostly under the radar. 3. ENLIGHTENMENT: The mental aspect of light which is metaphorical: enlightenment, (critical) reflection and adopting different perspectives to bring certain important life aspects in and out the spotlights. Being a group of Belgian and Icelandic light-catchers we were able to shed some light to the light. Via critical reflection we tried to define what light (natural and artificial) means to us. We defined its advantages and disadvantages and tried to question its' necessity of human living and life in general and this via considering each other's cultural perspectives. Due to our different country of origin, both extremes of the light-pollution axis could be taken into account.Taking a critical attitude is not only about the construction of a discussion or argumentation, but also about really taking responsibility. Only then a critical view can be substantiated. We considered these aspects via different types of artistic expressions which also imply the use of lack light. "Remember to look up at the stars, not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see & wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious." This beautiful sentence of Stephen Hawking inspired us through the exchange. At the end of the project, we organised a LIGHT NIGHT event where we presented the project to the local community. An exhibition with our results, a quiz, good food and drinks and activities for the children made this event fabulous and very interesting.
