CALYPSO - Common Action for Learning, Youth Participation and Sustainability within EU Organizations was a multi-action pilot project part of Lunaria's new medium-term strategy in the field of environmental sustainability and sustainable development. The overall objective of the project was to develop tools and working methods, among youth workers and associations, to raise awareness of the importance of promoting new sustainable approaches and for education for sustainable development. This objective arose from the consortium's need to find new tools to combat climate change and propose new models of sustainable development among young people. The term "sustainable development," first used by the United Nations in a report in the 1980s, can be described as a type of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Over the years, numerous youth movements have sprung up demanding immediate solutions to achieve sustainable development for a more equitable and ecological world. Sustainability is not only about environmental issues, but also about social equity and economic development: a community in which everyone is able to enjoy equally the range of economic, social, political, civil, cultural and environmental rights and needs. In the 2015 U.N. agenda in which the Sustainable Development Goals-SDGs to be achieved by 2030-were presented, the 193 member states reaffirm their commitment to sustainable development, and education plays a key role in this regard. UNESCO has established the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) precisely because of the need for the education system to address the growing environmental challenges facing the planet. For this kind of education to be effective, several principles need to be taken into consideration, first and foremost its local relevance and cultural anchoring, taking into account the environmental, economic and social conditions of different communities. CALYPSO was therefore placed within this general framework with the aim of strengthening skills and providing youth, youth workers and civil society organizations with new tools aimed at raising awareness of sustainability and related sensitive issues among youth groups and their local communities. In addition, the project aimed to promote youth participation, and in particular the involvement of youth with fewer opportunities, through informal networking and enhanced interactions among partners to strengthen capacity to raise awareness of sustainability. The project was composed of four actions: a Virtual Training Course - VTC, an Online Advance Planning Visit - APV Online, and two interconnected Youth Exchanges - YEs. This structure was designed by the consortium to facilitate youth access to sustainability-related knowledge and peer learning. For each sub-action, specific objectives were identified to ensure a coherent pathway through the different phases of the project. The specific objectives are as follows: A.1 VTC: -To better explore sustainability and of the related sensitive issues, in order to create a common understanding of the subject/s; - To share and map the existing methods and approaches youth workers and organizations are using in the different European countries to raise awareness on sustainability; -To exchange, test, assess and upgrade methods and tools, specifically conceived to raise awareness on sustainability, to better reach young people and youth at risk of exclusion both online and offline. A.2 APV Online: - To gather the future group leaders of the two Youth Exchanges - YEs in order to prepare the upcoming steps, run the logistic check, better share the participants’ profiles, develop the final agendas and select the working methods to apply during the two YEs. A.3 YE1 and A.4 YE2: - To reach out young people in general and marginalized youth to promote exchange, understanding, intercultural learning; - To raise awareness among young people on sustainability, developing a critical thinking and understanding of the current situation in the participating countries; - To create the space for experimenting new participative tools to afterwards raise awareness on sustainability among groups of peers, through workshops and other actions. In addition, the project aimed to develop two strategic objectives in the field of "Education and Training 2020" namely: SO2-improving the quality and effectiveness of education and training (through TC) and SO3-promoting equity, social cohesion and active citizenship (through YE and subsequent follow-up measures). Finally, CALYPSO was designed in line with the horizontal priority of the Annual Work Program 2020, which aims to support, across all sectors, raising awareness of environmental and climate change challenges, and experimenting with innovative practices.
