Objectives

The “FosteRing sElfentreprenEurial Skills to supporT Youth empLoymEnt – FREE STYLE” project was presented by ProMETEUS Association in Italy and its partners coming from Greece, Spain, Finland, France and Hungary. The project was based on the need to network the different realities of youth workers to develop skills in working with young unemployed people. On the basis of the common needs analysis carried out in the project design phase, all partners have identified the urgency to work with young people and support them in developing skills related to the world of new professional profiles and self-employment, with a particular focus on the areas of strategic development of the European economy, such us the tourism sector and promotion of the areas. FREE STYLE was conceived to reflect with the youth workers involved on the issue of youth unemployment: a particularly sensitive issue of great interest and very consistent within the Union debate. Indeed, recent Eurostat data shows that youth unemployment is still a great issue, and in particular the huge scissors between EU countries: the EU28 rated 14.3% in July 2019, but we have to underline that the highest figure is the Greek one (39.6%), slightly above the Spanish one (32.1%) and Italy (28.9%). Not by hazard one of the most important flagship initiative of the EU for the 2014-2020 is Youth Guarantee. Operators working with young people must therefore consider as a priority to assist young people in developing non-formal skills related to lifelong learning, personal branding, versatility and adaptability as keys to personal and business success. Specifically, we want to focus our project on a specific sector of Europe's business and economic development, to reflect with operators on practical issues that can be easily replicated in other contexts: the tourism business sector, which according to European directive “Europe first tourist destination ", represents a very important part in the current economic development. With a turnover of around 1.8 million, it now employs 5.2% of the total workforce and represents Europe's third largest development sector after the commercial and construction sectors. Both the coordinating association and its partners intended to give it life, thanks to FREE STYLE, to a veritable platform for exchange and training involving actors in the field of youth in order to create new opportunities for youth employment, working to fight the mismatch, stimulate and educate to self and self-awareness, and the development of skills in the entrepreneurship sector. It is precisely from these data (unemployment rates and the possibility of economic development of the tourism sector) that we started, involving the partner associations, moreover coming from those EU countries where youth unemployment is higher, to develop our project, which aimed to work with youth workers to be able to: - give young people the possibility of coming directly into contact with the world of business and work - allow them to express their potential and attitudes and better understand interests and limits, developing transversal skills - enable them to learn from practical experience and learn to communicate and work in an international team, improving interpersonal skills - form human capital and create job placement opportunities - build an orientation on job search and analysis of skills and motivations - overcome the classic training methods and guide young people in acquiring autonomy and capacity starting from concrete facts - instilling self-orientation skills and training young people to have self-confidence, demonstrate capacity for initiative, flexibility and mental flexibility, willingness to change - guide them towards the development of an entrepreneurial idea, verifying their consistency with respect to their personal characteristics and keeping them in relation to the socio-economic context. In light of this, the project aimed at sharing youth workers from partner organizations, specifically youth leaders, but also company tutors and professional trainers, with new knowledge and non-formal skills, especially in the fields of territorial marketing and new technologies; through the activities foreseen by the project the participants had at their disposal the necessary tools to understand how to approach young people, enhancing their self-entrepreneurial qualities, thus contributing to the requalification of many young people and experimenting with the learning techniques and the chosen themes through the magnifying glass of the economic sector selected for the experimentation of our project, namely tourism. The youth workers were thus better able to favour the integration of young people into the world of work, in light of the new market rules. This is essentially the primary need we wanted to address through our project: to ensure that the youth workers involved in the project interface with the young people.
