Objectives

Encouraged by the successful realization of 'Spread the word, sing with us (part 1, 2 and 3)' youth exchange projects and motivated by the eagerness of the participants and our local volunteers to carry on with the idea of music as a tool for self-expression, we decided to bring to life a fourth sequel of this project. This project have encouraged young people from all over Europe to use music as a tool to express themselves and their ideas. We have reached these objectives through series of non-formal based activities. The activities took participants back in time and allowed them to grasp how music developed through the years and peeked into the influence of music within their daily lives. The participants crafted their own instruments and took part in an international jamming session. The crafted instruments allowed all participants to be able to take part in a jamming sessions and perform with the others for the rest of the project regardless if they have had any prior musical skills. Divided into international groups, the participants explored the concept of a cover song, after which they prepared, rehearsed and performed some of the timeless classics in their own style. International bands were formed according to interest (musical genre, topics willing to address) and the participants wrote down their own lyrics and melody and put them together into a song. The author songs of participants addressed current European issues viewed through their eyes. After a lot of rehearsing, the bands did an in-house performance where the author songs of participants were performed followed by a jamming session. Which were the needs and issues that we tackled with this project? Young people feel the urge to share their thoughts and feelings, for their voice to be heard in order to initiate and see the changes that they want to see within their private lives, their neighborhood, local community and the European Union as a whole. We chose music because it is a universal tool that does not know any limits. Anyone can practice music, regardless of age, gender, religion, cultural and economic background and status in society. It is what makes it such an amazing tool for youth work and the reason why we at 'ReAct' work on building a path to further explore the potential of music as s tool in youth work. Each participating country prepared one non-formal based workshop and presented it on project. In this way, the multicultural dimension was enhanced and all participants equally contributed to the project. The project included a wider span of countries (compared to its predecessors) and this made participants more aware of other cultures, allowed them to compare positive practices and make a network of international contacts that will help them spread this initiative in future. The participants worked in mixed multicultural bands and this helped them to develop their sense of European citizenship and identity. The objectives of this project was to encourage young people to use music as a tool to express themselves and build bridges towards others. To support the participants into using music to unleash their creativity and improve various personal skills.
