By implementing this project, we wanted to achieve following: 1. To address the issues of racism and xenophobia raising in Europe. People across the Europe continue to be targeted by racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance just because of their race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation or gender identity, disability, social status or other characteristics. Since we live in digital age, there is a significant increase of racist and xenophobic hate speech being spread in online surroundings, especially through social networks. NGOs, especially those working in the field of human rights promotion, with minorities, and protection and young people as a target group, need effective, simple and creative tools which will help them to support young people to stand against this type of human rights violations and contribute to peaceful coexistence in their communities. Considering the quantity of time young people every day spend online, counter and alternative narratives used online can have a huge effect and great contribution in combating racism and xenophobia. 2. to empower youth workers/leaders/trainers to be able to support young people in combating racism, discrimination and xenophobia through development of counter and alternative narratives. With this project, in cooperation with partner organizations, we wanted to provide the space for new youth workers/trainers/leaders to gain needed competences and tools in the field of human rights protection to be able to contribute to high quality youth work and support young people in combating raacism, especially through development of counter and alternative narratives. 3. to support development of capacities of partner organizations to combat hate speech specifically targeting race related discrimination, especially in online environments. Considering the mentioned situation regarding racism and xenophobia, with this project we aimed to increase the capacity of partner organizations by equipping their staff who work with young people with needed tools and competences related to development and implementation of counter and alternative narratives as response to racist and xenophobic hate speech. In this way the capacity of partner organizations to work on promotion and protection of human rights and dignity of this specific group was enhanced while, at the same time, human rights approach is assured. By enhancing capacity of each partner organization, we also enhanced the capacity of our network. 4. to contribute to mission and vision of No Hate Speech movement Our network, NoHateMakers was established as a result of involvement of different organizations and individuals into the No Hate Speech Movement of the Council of Europe and with the aim to contribute to Movement’s vision and mission. This project was 9th in the row implement under the network umbrella since its establishment in 2017. Although NHSM campaign meanwhile finished, its purpose still remains relevant considering different forms of hate speech emerging every day and targeting different groups and with these kinds of projects, through empowerment of youth workers and youth organizations we want to keep acting and expand capacities to tackle human rights violations in our communities. 5. to enlarge number of youth workers and organizations in order to ensure sustainability of No Hate Makers Network With this project we expanded number of organizations and youth workers, leaders and trainers that are fully equipped to protect human rights of minorities in order to keep our network active and competent to tackle this kind of problems, especially in online environment. Best way to keep network active and sustainable and to serve the purpose that was created for is to keep investing into development of its members. With this project we were focused on providing partner organizations and their staff with needed competences and tools which they will use, first of all, in their local communities with local youth, where they identified raising racist hate speech and where minority groups lives, to contribute to peaceful coexistence and combating discrimination, with emphasis on involving young people from the community into the process and support their active involvement and sense of social responsibility. On the other hand, by focusing on online environment, we wanted to have an impact on things happening on social networks, specially facebook and instagram, as one of the most popular and most used social network which can reach many people in short time and it is very often used as a platform to spread hate and to discriminate certain groups or individuals. Objectives of this project were: • to explore the causes of and encourage critical thinking and discussion about racism and xenophobia in European context • to support development of competences of youth workers, leaders and trainers in the field of human rights education, particularly in combating hate speech targeting race, colour and ethnicity of people through counter and alternative narratives • to encourage use of WE CAN! manual and counter and alternative narratives in work with young people • to raise the awareness about link between hateful narratives and youth radicalization and encourage the use of this tool in its prevention • to support capacity building of partner organization, strengthen the cooperation and assure the sustainability of our networks.
