Objectives

Even before the pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, the situation with youth unemployment in Europe was critical and the general opinion of the youth was quite pessimistic. More than half of young people couldn’t find decent work and around 5 million people younger than 25 were still jobless. According to the latest World Bank statistics (2020), youth unemployment in the participating countries of this project looked like this: North Macedonia - 39.1%, Greece 35.1%, Serbia - 30.0%, Italy - 29.3%, Turkey - 23.7% and Croatia 17.8%. The situation looks dramatic, but there is a way out. The way out we see in the philosophy of entrepreneurship and that is why we we applied with this project as an attempt to break the dominant pessimistic limiting belief that governs young people. What better place to start with the introduction to the concept of entrepreneurship than with sports?! Sport is one of the greatest motivators of our time. It is about excellence, pushing yourself to the limit and also taking success and failure in your stride. Moreover, sports are dramatic, real and most importantly unscripted, which makes it inspirational. There are multiple things that can be learned from playing or even watching a sport. When we watch in awe how great athletes are winning the games, then we realize that with the right attitude everything is possible. Like the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan said: “Never say never, because limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.” Oftentimes, business is referred to as a game, where the winner is the entrepreneur who finds success. In this case, the playing field is the office and the players within the game are the different companies that compete for customers in the industry. The competition within the ranks of a business can be fierce as on a field, and the antics of business entrepreneurs can be strikingly similar to famous athletes. What is required for being a successful entrepreneur, the same is required for being successful in any sport. Entrepreneurship is the act of creating a business starting from scratch, which requires faith in your ability, thinking big, discipline and strategic thinking. The same can be said for any sport. Therefore, the main aim of the project "From zero to hero" was to bring together 36 young people and youth leaders from North Macedonia, Croatia, Italy, Serbia, Turkey and Greece in order to introduce them to the concept of entrepreneurship and sports education as one of the solutions for combating youth unemployment. To reach the main aim, the project had the following objectives: - to improve the entrepreneurial mindset and skills of 36 young people and youth leaders and to introduce them to the basics of entrepreneurship education; - to explore the connection, similarities and common characteristics of entrepreneurship and sports, especially in the ways to find success in both field; - to address youth unemployment as a common problem in Europe by educating and improving the employability skills of young people through non-formal and sports education; - to promote and foster mutual understanding, intercultural learning and cooperation between 36 young people and youth leaders from different cultures, backgrounds and regions; - to introduce participants to the philosophy of different sports by learning from experienced coaches/players about the right mindset, motivation, teamwork, processes, techniques and strategies for succeeding in sports; - to strengthen international cooperation and partnership building between youth organizations from 6 European countries for working on entrepreneurship and sports education; - To promote and educate about Erasmus+ programme and Youthpass as tools to work with young people in the fields of employability, entrepreneurship and sports. The project fostered employability and strongly promoted European values, active citizenship, and intercultural dialogue. It also enhanced the creativity of participants and promoted entrepreneurship through peer learning, exchange of good practices and non-formal and sports education. This is fully in accordance with the general objectives of E+, concretely ET2020 framework, the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field and EU Youth strategy. The project contributed towards the achievement of all specific objectives of KA1 in field of youth by promoting of active participation in democratic life and intercultural dialogue; improving key competences and skills of young people; fostering quality improvements in youth work through enhanced cooperation between organisations; and by enhancing international dimension of youth activities.
