Objectives

The project refers to the European Youth Goal ,Sustainable Green Europe‘. It consisted of one peer learning training to design new youth projects in ecovillages and sustainability projects, in the field of education for sustainable development. An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes to regenerate social and natural environments. The 4 dimensions of sustainability (ecology, economy, the social and the cultural) are integrated into a holistic approach. Ecovillages are models of sustainable settlements that serve as training & learning centres offering non-formal learning activities plus, most importantly, informal learning through the immersion experience of sharing ecovillage life. The ecovillage approach combines care for the planet with the establishment of socially, ecologically and economically healthy working structures and communities. Central themes are social, ecological, economical and intercultural competences, participatory structures towards cooperative thinking approaches, community-led development, co-creation attitudes and how to acquire a network approach of thinking and doing. The pressing issues of our times are many: climate change and environmental crises, lack of social cohesion and radicalisation, economical and social crises, disparity between the North and South in a global economy, injustice, lack of equal opportunities. While governments, the UN and EU address these on the political level, the transition to a low-carbon, resilient, inclusive and fair global society also needs the active engagement of citizens and civil society. A shift in consciousness is needed, leading individuals to change their attitudes, values and lifestyle. Our ultimate goal was to address the burning issue of climate change and need for more social cohesion, tolerance and respect. The 2018 IPCC special report on global warming states it needs immediate action and „far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society“ to reach the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1,5° above pre-industrial level. Now that the climate crisis is becoming ever more obvious, especially young people feel increasingly concerned about this and other crisis. The Fridays for Future movement is demanding policy makers to take action to counteract climate change: good but not enough. Young people, like all citizens, need to re-evaluate their lifestyle choices for a greener and more sustainable society. Young people are also often more open to change than older generations. While increasing the pressure on governments to take action is important to achieve large scale changes, we believe it needs to be complemented with bottom-up initiatives from civil society working towards an enhanced awareness of and willingness to make climate friendly lifestyle choices on the individual and family level. Studies on several ecovillages have shown that their ecological footprint is considerably lower than the national average in their countries. The ecovillage model demonstrates how a low-carbon lifestyle is possible, while maintaining a high quality of life through social innovation. The partners‘ youth projects empower young people to contribute to the much needed societal changes both through sustainable lifestyle choices and through becoming active citizens. Ecovillages in general and the partners in this project strive to offer youth quality tools to address sustainability issues. Ecovillages promote active citizenship, entrepreneurial thinking, creativity and a solution-oriented approach. Ecovillages create inclusive and participatory structures based on values like respect for diversity, regeneration and sustainability, social justice, equality and equity, integrity and transparency. We believe it is important for youth to be exposed to these values & attitudes to be equipped for the challenges of our societies today. Ecovillages have been piloting low carbon lifestyles inspiring bottom-up changes that complement policy reform for decades. We wanted to contribute to the much needed societal changes through sharing our experience, connecting to those young people who are being mobilised and searching for answers, and reach out to those who are not yet giving sustainability much thought. The main project objective was to increase QUALITY and QUANTITY of SUSTAINABILITY YOUTH PROJECTS in ecovillages and other sustainability projects. The follow-up projects - promote sustainable lifestyles among young people, counteracting climate change and fostering the transition to a low-carbon and resilient society inspire youth to become active citizens - contribute to young people‘s personal development The project creates considerable added value through the creation of follow-up projects and it will have a large multiplier effect through large scale spreading of results among ecovillages and sustainability projects.
