Despite of huge efforts by government, organizations and social foundations the number of young people experiencing anxciety or other mental health issues is constantly rising in Sweden as well as in other countries. This is an enourmous tragedy, not only for the person him/herself who is only half living their adolecens, but also for society. Studies shows that the costs for society will be very high if the working capacity is put down by mental health issues. So the problem with mental health issues amoung young persons is something very worth while fighting for. The question we asked ourselves was how come, with everything being done, the numbers keep getting worse? When we discussed this with our youth group connected to our foundation, a few things emerged. Most of them have had periods of depression, anxciety or panic attacs, but not many of them had saught help or talked to an adult about it. There was an over all feeling that to call for help you must have a lot worse problems. Another thing was that most of the helporganizations or govenments websites was experienced as very close to school in layout and approach tone, and that was a negative thing according to them. So we started to think of new more creative ways to reach and help the young people struggeling with mental health. We also experienced that most people have a hard time using words to describe their emotions, especially boys. So we also took that in to concideration. And thats when we thought of animations. Short animations inspired by the everyday problems you struggle with. We wanted to arrange short safe wellprepared camps where the participants would get new tools to handle their mental health issues, to make them feel better. Also we wanted to use the creative energy, as people often forget what they are struggeling with when they are creative. Even if it’s just temporarily. It becomes a time to rest, even if you are working. Another goal was to use ways to communicate what you are feeling without using words. Animations are really expressful and it is often possible to show extremely specified emotions without having to express them verbally. Finally we also wanted to explore if the fact that you look at your problem from another angle would affect your suffering. Hoping the change of perspective – from being captive of what you feel, to looking at what you feel and finding ways of portraying that in an animation – would create a small gap between you and the problem. A step that could make a big difference.
