Objectives

Based on the experience of the partners included in the project, experiences of the coordinator of the project, who is working active in youth work and Theatre of the Oppressed for last 10 years in Slovenia and abroad, it is clear that Theatre of the Oppressed methodology even if it is a very efficient methodology for handling diverse social problems is not enough known and applied as a method of youth work across the Europe. The project Streets for Theatre! is project is an answer to the needs of various youth organizations that need competences in new methods for improving the situation of their direct target groups (and upgrade of the Theatre of the Oppressed method and supplement to the youth work). Theatre of the Oppressed methodology was developed by Brazilian director, dramatist, and politician Augusto Boal in the context of discrimination and human rights violation in Brazilian society in the 60’-ties. Invisible Theatre method is highly adaptable to the needs of different communities, with a large capacity to cover all kind of the social issues: human rights violations, power abuse and oppression in different ways, lack of activism, discrimination, violent radicalization, exclusion, poverty, marginalization, xenophobia, etc. and through a creative approach provides a space for people to reflect, find solutions to these topics and transfer the solutions in their lives. Especially in times when, after the epidemic, indoor gatherings are undesirable, while forms of totalitarianism and neo-fascism are on the rise in Europe, the importance of street theater is more and more important. The Invisible theater takes it places on the streets, addresses random passers-by, and at the same time draws attention to the topics that should not be talked about. With a creative approach, it gives people space to think and find solutions to these topics and transfer solutions in everyday life. The main goal of the project is to increase the reach of youth work to increase the participation and involvement of young people in social processes and change. The training program is designed for youth workers and active members of youth organizations who want to develop their competencies with theater oppressed and have a better and longer lasting impact in their communities. In the project we will complement the technique of Invisible Theater with the approaches of street interventions in public space, which have been developed by Slovenian performers in the collectives of Kud Ljud and the Third Hand for the last 20 years.
