Objectives

The aim of the study visit was to get to know the Finnish approach in youth work and the outdoor educational programs in particular and get familiar with the winter environment in Finland. Our overall objective as a result of this study visit was to increase the quality of youth work in Plusko, winter programs especially. The first objective was to get to know Marttinen’s approach to youth work in their natural environment, share and exchange our mutual experience and practices in relation to youth work, coaching, training, adventure & outdoor and to identify our respective needs of mutual enrichment regarding the expertise in winter outdoor programs. Second objective was to learn more about Finnish winter environment and its challenges by experiencing it during a 3 days long expedition facilitated by 2 experienced Finnish instructors to support the learning process and safety. An extra objective was to widen our knowledge about how experiential learning could be designed and organized at the university level, by visiting the HUMAK University in Helsinki. We aimed to learn more about their methods, what specific study subjects they offer in the Bachelor’s study program for future outdoor instructors and discuss how to reflect and transfer it in our internal training cycle for new instructors at Plusko, certified by the Ministry of Education.
