The main aim of our youth exchange was to bring together a group of 25 young enthusiasts from 5 countries, who are interested in conservation of agro biodiversity and finding the way for potential use (ecological, genetically and also economical) of old and local crops varieties. Despite the fact that these varieties could not compete with modern visually perfect crops from intensive farming, they have various interesting traits like flavor or durability and they can offer us a bigger range of genes for future breeding. This crisis time reveals the importance of local food production. We wanted to raise awareness among youth and local communities about the importance of preserving the varieties that are adapted to local conditions. With the decline of agriculture in our region, the fruit trees missed care and many of them are dying. We wanted to start a movement of replanting orchards in our village. We also wanted to develop the sense of entrepreneurship among youth. We did it using non-formal education, focusing mainly on the following activities: - Introduction into the cultural evolution of plants with special stress on development of apple tree varieties, sharing the experience of the protection and conservation of old and local crops within the international collective; presentation of other successful projects for conservation of old and local crops. - practical hands-on workshop - mapping the old apple tree varieties in our region. - preparation of a presentation for local people about traditional varieties in the region connected with an event for the public, including a degustation of local fruit trees and show of apple juice making. As well as a presentation of other methods of preservation of local fruit (cooking, cider,...) - encouraging youth to engage in similar activities in their homelands with the offer of help with networking and sharing the experiences of organising similar mapping with presentations for public in their own country. - supporting youth abilities for initiative and entrepreneurship and improving their skills for future work life. - supporting active citizenship and positive attitudes towards what is happening in public spaces and landscapes.
