Thalassemia, popularly known as Mediterranean Anemia, is a genetic blood disease and is not contagious. It is inherited from parents. It is common in Mediterranean countries, including Turkey. It has spread to European and world countries due to immigration. It is a serious disease that starts at the age of 3-4 months and requires continuous blood transfusion. Since thalassemia carriers in the community have a normal appearance, it cannot be understood whether they are carriers unless special thalassemia tests are performed. In order to prevent the disease, it is absolutely necessary to have a Thalassemia test before marriage. Although the detection of thalassemia carriers can be prevented by genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis, more than hundreds of thousands of babies with thalassemia are born in the world every year. This disease, which affects public health, the young and productive generation, lifelong life and threatens the future, requires congenital disability and two units of blood must be taken every three weeks. According to the data of the Turkish Society of Hematology, an average of 365,000 babies with Thalassemia are born and treated every year in the world. There are approximately 1.300.000 carriers and 4.500 patients in our country. According to WHO statements, there are approximately 250 million thalassemia carriers in the world. More than 1 million people in our country are unaware that they have this disease (http://kanhastaliklari.net/icerik.php?id=127&alt_id=198). Social awareness is very low according to the statement of our project partners. According to the research we have done and the data we have obtained; Scientific studies on Thalassemia, which is a great risk to the countries of the world in terms of social, economic and health, are available as articles, academic publications, statistical data, as can be seen in a few examples from NGOs, public institutions/organizations below. Awareness events in the form of international meetings, etc. in countries one day a year. is happening. These studies are insufficient to reach the general population. https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?cond=Thalassemia&term=&cntry=&state=&city=&dist= http://www.thalassemia.ca/resources/faq-2 http://thalassemia.com/default.aspx#gsc.tab=0 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4275533 https://ukts.org/pdfs/awareness/asianaware.pdf https://www.cdc.gov/features/international-thalassemia/index.html https://thalassaemia.org.cy http://www.atoder.org.tr http://www.talasemifederasyon.org.tr/ Thalassemia-related projects supported by E+ funds started in 2015, and a total of 19 projects have been realized so far (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/projects/#search/keyword=Thalassemia&programmes[0]=31046216).
