Objectives

This youth initiative appeared as a need of youth to explore the topic of Active participation in the context of a dynamic Europe. Based on the results of the local research run by the young people who initiated this project, only a small percentage of young people (22 %) know what active citizenship means, its dimension and its impact in their life. Based on the results of the questionnaires applied by the initiators in their educational environment, schools encourage active participation of youth in their communities to limited extend, but burden curricula and lack of interest of young people prevent it from doing so in an optimal way. Moreover, many families do not educate their children in the civic spirit, but unfortunately, on the contrary, families encourage their children to initiate civic actions only in exchange of financial reward (France and Moldova). Consequently, young people develop negative attitudes toward active participation that lead only to underdevelopment of their communities: on short term: increased passivity towards the problems of their place, weak engagement in finding solutions for community problems, loss of high potential of born leaders, on long term: passive adults who are not willing to bring their unique contribution to the development of their community and, further, of their society, lack of initiative, increased percentage. The young initiators consider that Active citizenship is one of the most important steps towards healthy societies, especially in our country, recently shaken by the economic and social crisis. Young people should not remain ‘citizens in the waiting’, but have a great opportunity to apply their capabilities for a greater improvement in society. The ongoing world crisis with COVID-19 pandemic and its many coming aftermaths has illustrated one more time that European values of empathy, solidarity and united actions cross the borders as well, remaining the core of the modern institute of citizenship where young people, at long last, may and should act on a higher level.
