Objectives

Alcohol misuse is one of the Europe’s top three priority public health areas. With the rates of alcohol consumption among the European population, the issue is among the leading causes of ill health and premature death, overpassing even tobacco. Youth alcohol consumption is a problem that exists in all European countries. In early adolescence youths are extremely vulnerable to alcohol initiation. The reasons for such initiation may differ, e.g. young people can see drinking as a symbol of adult identity as opposed to the world of childhood, a means of escaping from situations that they feel powerless to control, to relax or feel better, etc. But the consequences can be grave anyway: alcohol misuse is the third leading risk factor for disease and mortality in Europe. Being concerned with this issue, our partnership consisting of youth organisations from the UK, Moldova, Latvia, Moldova, Belarus and Russia proposed a youth project to address alcohol misuse among youth through sport volunteering. Besides, the partners recognise that young people are important resources when addressing alcohol consumption. This is why this project also aimed at using a peer-to-peer approach to raise awareness about alcohol consumption and to gain the active participation of youth in recognising and dealing with alcohol misuse and its consequences. In this way they could effect change in their communities. With thorough consideration of the Covid-19 pandemics, the partners took the required steps, with the participants’ safety staying the priority. The locally-based phases were carried out online, whereas the mobility activities were implemented with all applicable precautions taken into consideration. We were constantly monitoring the situation and followed the recommendations of the governments and health authorities of the partner countries in the part of travelling and border crossing. The decision to carry out the Youth Exchange on the scheduled dates was made only when the state rules of all the countries participating in the project allowed the groups to travel to Moldova without any restrictions. The objectives of the project were: - Raising young people’s awareness of the personal and societal issues associated with alcohol consumption and its consequences. - Empowering young people to affect their own health, health of their peers and communities in general through sports volunteering. - Equipping the youth with increased competences and skills to help them better address project issues in their communities and build a stronger sense of belonging to their communities. - Developing young people’s competences and skills aimed at reducing alcohol consumption among their peers. - Promoting innovative thinking as a means of addressing young people’s problems. - Developing life-long skills and healthy behaviours. - Using the project as a springboard for networking between the participants. - Making the young participants aware of the Erasmus+ programme and its potential. The partnership understands that it cannot resolve the problem of alcohol consumption among young people once and for all, but it can show an array of youngsters that sports volunteering is a worthy alternative to alcohol, and these young people can help their peers understand it as well. With this project the partners aim to inspire the participants to think innovatively how they can deal with the issues of alcohol consumption through the use of sports volunteering. Healthy behaviours and sport will open up new opportunities, give way to new creative solutions and help to rethink the existing obstacles that hinder the achievement of the desired educational, social and health results.
