Objectives

The Park Explorers project aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of the participants regarding environmental topics, urban parks, and cultural heritage; develop their consciousness about their active role in the community; and empower young people to act as a catalyst for equality and inclusion, enabling those facing fewer opportunities to experience cultural heritage discovery through fitness and sports activities. The following objectives were identified with the partners during the application phase: 1) Enhance youth's ability to identify, better explain and advocate for the value and protection of both cultural and natural heritage; 2) Raise young people's awareness concerning ways to discover and experience cultural heritage; 3) Support participants in developing their knowledge about innovation in local development, specifically for sustainability; 4) Improve youth wellbeing through the contact with nature; 5) Encourage young people in becoming more physically active, while respecting their needs and capabilities. It is important to highlight that some objectives may be written in a slightly different way compared to the application. However, its meaning and purpose remain the very same. Furthermore, considering the nature of the project, HYPE Merseyside and all the partner organisations agreed to add a new objective (4) that matched the fundamental of the project. This project was created from the need in bridging the gap between cultural heritage opportunities and young people, as the younger generation tends to be under-represented in heritage audiences. In this regard, we put forward an innovative approach that used fitness and sport as the core of the project to motivate and engage young people in discovering and exploring the cultural heritage of urban parks. This original approach allowed us to tackle several benefits at once. One of the main objectives of the project was to include and empower European participants with fewer opportunities in an international experience, providing them with the opportunity to develop new and existing skills essential for future employability. Park Explorers also aimed to connect, share, and bring different people and cultures together in a safe and supportive environment, especially after the hardship brought up by COVID-19. Through the project, young people had the chance to get involved in social action activities and to deepen their understanding of the different types of learning, with an emphasis on the non-formal learning and how it can be used as a starting point to promote sustainability on a local level. Furthermore, the project was designed and executed to honour the EU Work Plan for Culture 2019-2022, in which we mainly addressed priority A, ‘Sustainability in cultural heritage’, and priority B, ‘Cohesion and wellbeing’; as well as the Health 2020 policy framework, which underlines the necessity to invest in health through the empowerment of people while creating supportive environments.
