Objectives

Discrimination and racist incidents are very common in the countries of the partner organizations nowadays. On September 2020, the stadium of the main football team in Sofia was closed for two games due to some violent incidents that ended with more than 40 people arrested. In Cyprus, interethnic tensions are still very visible in the stadium bleaches and in the last football World Cup that France won in 2018, many of their footballers suffered from racist insults during their games to due their skin colour. Recent research also shows that Finland has been one of the countries in the EU with most racist incidents against people of Sub-Saharan African descent. Nowadays, sports are not just the practice of physical activity. Sports reflect on culture, identity and are a mean of empowerment. Sport is one of the most massified phenomena of contemporary society and it has a huge influence over peoples lives all over the world. However, there is still a lack of awareness on Human Rights topics related to the issue. As such a popular phenomenon, sport constitutes both an opportunity and a threat for certain values such as non-discrimination, equality, and inclusion. Even if there are many initiatives in the field of sport, the reality is that there is still much work to do and that racist, sexist, homophobic and discriminatory attitudes are still very common in this field. While it is still easy to see discriminatory attitudes towards certain social groups based on gender, ethnicity, disabilities or more, sports constitute a great opportunity to spread the values of inclusion, non-discrimination and diversity. The objective of this youth exchange is to show 20 youth coming from 4 different countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland and France) how this values can be spread in and through sports and to create an intercultural dialogue between the participants from these four countries in order to learn from each other and share experiences about the topic. After the exchange, the youngsters will go back to their home countries and will implement an activity of their choice related to the topic of the exchange that could go from organizing sports events to perfoming some activities in schools or youth centres with the support of their organizations and group leaders who would be youth workers related to the sending organization working on topics related to the issue always with the goal of spreading the values of non-discrimination After the exchange the participants will be able to identify the challenges related to discrimination and sports and will have learnt about the topic from many different methods including debate sessions, presentations, group work and physical activities. The playful factor of the exchange is also an important part of it in which the participants will learn by taking part in different sports activities and will not just learn but enjoy the process. This projects supports Erasmus+ Programme General objective on improving the quality and efficiency of education, training and youth work in line with the Europe 2020 Strategy, the objectives of the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training, as well as the Engaging, Connecting and Empowering young people: In regards to the concrete Key Action 105 of the Erasmus + programme this project will build the capacity of young people in the field of Human Rights and non-discrimination related to sport. The project aim is to share good practices in the field and also promote an intercultural dialogue between the participants from the different partner countries. Furthermore, people with fewer opportunities or financial difficulties will also be highly encouraged to apply. The issues and needs addresed in this project are common things that affect all the countries taking part in the project. The exchange will use an innovative methodology in which sports and physical activity will be used in order to bring up the subject of discrimination and how discriminatory attitudes happen in our everyday life. It will also give the opportunity to the participants to learn about how to fight all these discriminatory attitudes and create a more tolerant society.
