The 2019 EP elections showed a large increase in participation of age groups under 25 and 25-29. Nevertheless, young people are not truly engaged with the EU as few get to know and understand the EU procedures or witness firsthand the workings of the EU institutions. The Eurobarometer 375/2013 showed in a Report on youth and EU political engagement that less than 50% of young people across the EU had a real knowledge about how the MEPs are elected, around 79% would not consider a career in EU politics and 64% believe that their vote makes no difference. The recent pandemic times have further limited the access of young people to such opportunities and underlined the need for relevant skills, adapted to the new reality. We aimed to ensure that young people learn about the EU and stay engaged. This motivated us to organise this project: MEU Symposium 2022. BETA Czech Republic is the national branch of BETA Europe, which acts as an umbrella association and encompasses 16 national branches and over 1,000 individual members. Its branches and partners organise, amongst others, annual Model European Union ( MEU) conferences in their countries of establishment. Since 2008, MEUs have been organised in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, at the European Committee of Regions in Brussels, in the national Parliaments of France, Poland, and Portugal, in the national Ministries of Estonia and Greece as well as at universities throughout Europe. MEUs are three to seven-day long events where participants get a firsthand experience of the European decision making process by simulating mainly the Ordinary Legislative Procedure and the activity of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. MEUs are the main projects through which BETA Europe, its national branches and partners provide young people with means to discover the principles behind the European policy making process and get them closer to the EU values and institutions, showing them that their voice matters in the decision making process. This innovative way of bringing the EU closer to local and national communities makes MEUs successful. As a result, former participants all over Europe have implemented new MEU conferences, gathering interest from youth from all Member States and their countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Turkey, Armenia, and the USA. With a growing network, we also saw an increasing demand for sharing know-how and expertise on how to best organise such events, especially since most organisers are young volunteers who want to make a difference but may not know how. In response, BETA Europe and its branches have organised an annual MEU Symposium since 2015. The MEU Symposium 2022 event brought together organisers of many MEU conferences as well as participants interested in setting up an MEU conference on their own. The fundamental objectives of the MEU Symposium were to share best practices, ideas and experiences as well as training those wishing to start organising a MEU conference in all aspects of such a project whilst also developing their professional skills, such as project management, effective leadership, time and team management, fundraising and communication skills. The MEU Symposium aimed to provide both workshops for beginners and roundtables for experienced organisers on different topics related to setting up and running MEU conferences in order to ensure their quality and accessibility as well as for further improving the MEU concept so it meets the professional and educational needs of participants. Given the success of the previous editions of the MEU Symposium, with positive immediate and long-term effects, we organised this one in Prague in August 2022 so as to ensure the quality of the MEU concept and the conferences implemented by BETA organisations and partners, and diversify our activities to reach a new target group of participants from countries neighbouring the EU and explore new online solutions to adapt to new realities and challenges. The objectives of this project were fully in line with those of the Erasmus+. The MEU Symposium aimed to contribute to: improving the mobility of youth across Europe, enhancing the international dimension of youth activities, improving the level of key competences and skills of young people, disseminating good practices, promoting participation in democratic life in Europe as well as active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion, promoting European values and raising awareness of the EU, its institutions, and policies.
