Europe is becoming increasingly culturally diverse due to the rapid increase in migration and movement of citizens. This process represents both opportunities and challenges for European societies. Culture is not only part of our identity, but also part of our problem. It remains the primary source of our identity, and the primary source of our marginalization from others that it constantly reproduces and reaffirms. Young people have difficulty accepting a foreign culture when most are comfortable interacting with familiar people, behaviors, and ideas, but react with fear and apprehension when confronted with the unknown. One of the main goals of our project was to help participants become respectful of the multitudes of cultures and people with whom they will interact. Through this project, we have shown that cultural differences should be cherished and appreciated rather than judged and feared, and that cultural diversity is an advantage rather than a disadvantage. This project, carried out by PAMOJA AFRIKA and its different partners, was designed to exchange information about different cultures and international contexts that are necessary to broaden the horizon in order to bring positive changes in societies at local and regional levels. It was a great experience for all the participants as this issue is becoming a major concern for Civil Society Organizations and even European States. Whether they are national, religious, ethnic, social or cultural, minorities are an important asset for an intercultural Europe. However, this diversity does not always go hand in hand with social cohesion and cooperation, prerequisites for equal rights and opportunities. Faced with the rise of nationalism and identitarian withdrawal, while on the other hand, the history of societies has always been linked to and enriched by that of migrations, it seemed essential to us, as well as to our partners, to deal with the issue of diversity in a more in-depth manner via two axes - the management of diversity by youth professionals in their daily work (youth workers, young leaders etc.) - the work with young people around diversity and intercultural encounters to help them appreciate diversity and thus promote soft skills that are essential both to community life and to the socio-professional integration of young people (e.g.: cooperating despite differences, knowing how to draw the positive from each situation, optimizing the different strengths of each person, listening skills, arguing while respecting, agreeing to disagree etc.). The project was also in line with the objectives of the Erasmus+ program, notably to promote the participation of the less privileged in the democratic life of Europe, active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity. The project corresponds to the Erasmus+ priority of promoting diversity, intercultural and interreligious dialogue, and the common values of tolerance and respect for human rights. The youth exchange finally took place in Koln from 15 to 23 oCTOBER 2021 with the participation of 06 partner organizations of Pamoja Afrika.
