Objectives

The purpose of this project was to empower youth councils from five communities in their political and social activities by giving them a platform for discussing the “City of the Future” from a youth perspective. This was to be achieved by building and enhancing their civic engagement and entrepreneurship competences to enable them to initiate and pursue communal future-oriented projects and by creating a European and international network of youth councils that will stand for and spread the European values of democracy, diversity and anti-discrimination. At the same time, the project addressed the youth workers in charge of the youth councils and by proxy their youth departments who aim to embed international youth work in their child- and youth services. The objectives of the project were to bring together youth representatives and their supervising youth workers from five towns in a forum that enabled encounter, discussion and learning in informal and non-formal ways. The summit was a possibility for youth participants from very different social and educational backgrounds, cultures and religions to come together and interact in an intercultural, integrative context. The aim was for them to gain knowledge in chosen topics relevant for the city of the future from a youth perspective (e.g. sustainability), and to develop an array of competences in accordance with the European Key Competences that would empower them to actually pursue their ideas in their communities. More concretely, these were the objectives of the Youth Summit: - strengthen youth councils from five communities in their political and social activities, - create a space for exchange of youth workers who want to embed international youth work in their child and youth work, - bring together youth representatives and their supervisors from five cities in a forum that allows meeting, discussion and learning in an informal and non-formal way, - acquire knowledge on selected topics, - develop key skills that empower youth to actually implement their ideas in their communities, - initiate communal projects, - expand methodological knowledge and intercultural competences, - strengthen links between partner cities and establish a European, international network of youth councils and youth departments The Youth Summit also served as a means to engage the youth councils to look more deeply into the topics of the summit and bring those more into the public eye. This, in preparation and follow-up on the Youth Summit. Strengthening the bond between the twin towns and building a European, international network of youth councils and youth departments was a clear objective of the project, culminating in the summit that was a perfect opportunity for building strong personal relationships. Strong cooperation in the follow-up phase strengthened this network that contributed to connecting youth and youth services across Europe and beyond.
