Objectives

The project aimed to delve into the right to freedom according to Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights and shed light on various aspects. We wanted to examine current questions about freedom, especially when it may or must be restricted in favor of the common good, how it can be reclaimed, and how much value freedom and security hold for individual persons and the European Union. The participants in the youth exchange were to engage with the contrasting, yet guaranteed terms of freedom and security outlined in the same article. The focus was on examining these themes from different perspectives, particularly in relation to their own lived experiences as autonomous and conscientious co-creators of society. In the project, the realm of freedom, its scopes, and limitations were explored on both an individual and societal level, both within the local and European context. The youth encounter in 2023 presented a unique challenge as it concentrated on these complex aspects. Our objective was not only to raise awareness and empower the participants in their role as co-creators of present-day Europe but also to promote the development of their own attitudes and action strategies. We aimed to facilitate action-oriented learning, impart background knowledge on the topic and its various facets, demonstrate research opportunities, foster teamwork and collaborative skills, train in leading plenary discussions, support the self-organization of leisure programs, enhance social competence, and enable the preparation and execution of a project presentation before guests as a conclusion to the seminar.
