Objectives

The project had several objectives. The first aim was to familiarize the participants with the Jewish history of Germany. The importance of learning history and the historical origin of modern values was shown, and the understanding of history was highlighted as the key to comprehending crucial values such as mutual respect, cultural diversity, social inclusion, and justice, which helped to face modern challenges. Secondly, the project aimed at increasing youth cooperation between the countries: Russia and Germany. The issues of being open and anti-discriminatory were deemed extremely important in modern Europe, as well as various problems of contact between different cultures. Respectful attitudes toward people of different nationalities and religions were considered crucial nowadays. Thirdly, the project targeted increasing youth mobility. Intercultural learning within the project accelerated the expansion of intercultural competence among its participants. In everyday life, the participants faced certain difficulties in intercultural cooperation, inequality, and diversity oppression. One of the most significant issues was poor intercultural cooperation between young people. Russian youth was separated from European young people in terms of many aspects, and German youth needed to gain experience in intercultural communication. Apart from that, the groups of Jewish young people from two countries that participated in the project connected to their roots during the exchange. One of the objectives was to increase the mobility of young people and to build bridges between them. Equity was supported by being open to participants with certain difficulties or obstacles (e.g. educational, social, economic, or geographical). The aim was for people to be united in their diversity, so they were given the opportunity to get acquainted with each other and familiarize themselves with a part of European Jewish culture. The project Roots aimed at resolving the modern challenges of European society that arise during contact between different cultures, religions, and ethnicities. The main objective was to form in the participants such skills and attitudes as intercultural sensitivity, respect for diversity, social inclusion, opposition to hatred, racism, hate speech, and learning general human values through history lessons.
