Objectives

The project "Mythologies Coming Alive" was a youth exchange which experimented with an art approach to teach intercultural competences and grow youths into an international community with strong bonds. Art has defined and evolved culture for centuries which is why we believe it is an excellent method of exploring and understanding culture. The basic idea was for different youth groups to learn about the mythologies that shaped Europe and today's societies. Through presentations and discussions the group explored their own values and their ideas of a modern way of life. Based on these results ideas came alive in their artwork. Guided by a professional artist, participants also learned the technical skills of drawing with pencil, painting in oil, and digital painting. Having mixed international groups work on the same piece of art also fostered discussions and reaching a common understanding. The project managed to take a lot of the participants through a process of rapid personal development that not only helped them acquire artist skills but also focused on opening their minds to international cooperation and put them in a situation of intercultural learning in which they were motivated to find out more instead of being given tasks of having to present their culture. The event managed to support the process of expanding their minds and helped them experience other ways of thinking, other value systems and other beliefs through the common connection of art. The participants lived together for a week and experienced several art creation exercises in smaller mixed teams so that they had the opportunity to get to know each other well and explore each other's mind. We did a lot of these exercises outside in order to let the landscape inspire the participants. Discussions took place in the smaller groups but also regularly in the bigger groups. For instance, we met for a daily reflections every evening. As a result of the activities we wanted to turn the participants into confident community members with a sense of initiative and an international mind. This worked out extremely well and the community is still in touch with each other on our Discord server and very active.
