The described project was the realization of one of the main goals Weltblick set for itself in its foundation: the participation of socially disadvantaged young people in a youth exchange. The goals were manifold. On the one hand, the participants were to be given the opportunity to look beyond their horizons and make new, possibly at first uncomfortable experiences, and in retrospect to emerge from the project strengthened and courageous. Second, the program should encourage them to gain better access to reliable information and strengthen skills to critically evaluate information and engage in participatory and constructive dialogue. Furthermore, it should be ensured that all participants, both from Germany and Morocco, have equal access to non-partisan and youth-oriented information on how the EU works, how to get involved as a young EU citizen and what opportunities it offers. This point was also important for Moroccan youth because they come from a neighboring country of the EU, many people with a Moroccan migrant background live in the EU, and especially because Morocco, as a direct neighbor of the EU, has always influenced Europe culturally. New migration movements have also brought social and integration challenges. It is all the more important to provide spaces, resources, opportunities and programs that promote dialogue and social cohesion, as well as combat discrimination and exclusion. In the case of this project, the youth coming from Germany had a connection to Morocco, as these participants were German-Moroccan youth who brought with them a history of migration through their parents and grandparents. We wanted to ensure that socially disadvantaged youth had equal access to formal and non-formal learning environments to cover all dimensions of social participation. We were aware that we were taking a risk with this application, as Morocco is not an EU member state. Nevertheless, we saw it as our duty as a European organization not only to enter into partnership alliances in the middle of our EU borders, but especially now we see it as indispensable to enter into and consolidate relations at eye level with neighboring countries on the EU border. Not only the situation with the refugees shows more and more that we as the EU must not see ourselves as a closed system, but that it is also very relevant what happens directly on our doorstep, on our external borders. This was one of the main reasons why we considered it necessary to carry out this youth exchange with our Moroccan partner. Since on the one hand we were dealing with German-Moroccan youth who enrich the German cultural landscape through their family background and on the other hand we were dealing with Moroccan youth who came from Morocco and there were cultural similarities and differences between these youth, this project spanned an arc from Europe to North Africa and contributed to community building. In view of the migration from Morocco to European countries, working in partnership at eye level is also a sustainable goal of this cooperation, not only for this project but also for future projects. With regard to the participating organizations, our project can contribute to the expansion and strengthening of the international partnership network that the city of Wiesbaden maintains with Al Hoceima and to the further opening for European and international youth work.
