This project offered an opportunity for young people between the ages of 14 and 20 to meet together inter-culturally while learning practical workshop skills. We used table top games to inspire the participants to learn manual skills such as woodworking, carving, crafting skills and sculpting skills. These learned skills are useful in many different applications including building play or film sets, household repair, building furniture, and the like. Acquiring the ability to create something concrete, useful, and beautiful can be a tremendous boost to a young person’s sense of self worth, particularly among youths who struggle scholastically. The coordinator hosted the event at their woodworking tool shop where they could make sure the tools were used both safely and effectively. In order to gain inspiration for their creations, the participants were taken on a field trip around Bari to see examples of interesting and historical architecture, such as the castle and the old medieval buildings. We had a guide who helped the participants understand not only the aesthetic interest of such buildings but also the practical, delving into the reasons why certain architectural features were included in buildings (shape of the gates, size of the windows, look of teh facade, etc.). Due to the international nature of this project, the participants were engaging with youths from different countries and backgrounds than their own. Since the terrain projects were built in groups, the participants had an opportunity to engage socially with people of different cultures. Communication during a building project was seen as vital as well as learning to accommodate and understand different points of view, to make sure the building projects were successful. The conscious focus of the youths was on the fun terrain they were making, so the social and communication learning was done in a stealth manner. We know from a great deal of experience that the best way for young people to overcome biases and ignorance is to meet new people while sharing a common interest, such as playing together or engaging in creating something together.
