Increasing young people’s access to mobility programs is one of the most important objectives of Erasmus+ and has led to so far around 9 million people in Europe going abroad to other European countries both for short-term stays and longer periods. Getting to know Europe, exploring its variety and exchanging ideas and visions with other young people from all over Europe, lays the foundation for a strong identification with the European space and for an actively lived European Citizenship and thus remarkably contributes to Europe’s future as a united and solidarity-based entity. In many cases, the access to these important opportunities remains limited for young third country nationals living in Europe, and above all for young refugees in Europe that both in terms of the legal framework and their orientation in Europe, face particular obstacles. To answer those needs, we created in 2020 mobility local groups in 5 countries: Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Greece. Those groups of young people with(out) refugee background, got active as a pilot for 1 year in their local context to promote & increase young refugees’ access to existing mobility programs and especially voluntary services (national & European ones) and support them in exploring Europe and its numerous opportunities for young people. migration_miteinander focuses indeed on the topic mobility for refugees in Europe since its creation in 2017 and detected a strong need of young refugees to explore the European context and to benefit from its opportunities. With “mobility4U(s) promotion of mobility for refugees through local action - Generation 2” we wanted to continue to address these needs and to increase even more young refugees’ access to the existing mobility programs, responding also to the Erasmus+ objective to promote mobility of young people in Europe, in particular of those with fewer opportunities. At the same time, we wanted to answer the high interest of young Europeans in getting active in this field, as many young people contacted us wanting to build up a local group in their own city or joining already existing ones. Based on our pilot experience with the local groups, we decided to specialise our network of local groups in becoming mobility mentors, able to concretely support and accompany young people with refugee background in their mobility process during the preparation, implementation and follow-up phases. With Mobility4U(s), we aimed to equip those working with this target group with important new skills to be able to do so: Young youth workers (which includes active volunteers, cultural mediators and other professional figures working with young refugees and/ or in the mobility area) were trained in guiding young refugees on their mobility path, in providing information on that topic and in raising awareness on young refugees’ mobility desire. Thanks to their participation in this 2nd generation of training cycle, the participants went through a strong professionalisation process by exchanging with already experienced local group members and specialising in becoming mobility mentors. The objective was indeed as well to promote the exchanges between the participants of the first training cycle and new participants arriving with Mobility4U(s), for them to become part of a strengthened European network of young people, as well promoting peer-to-peer learning. Last but not least, our objective was to extend our offer to an additional country, Spain, thanks to our collaboration with our new partner Asociación Sei. With this project we thus wanted to react to the need of youth workers to get trained in the above mentioned topics as knowledge on them so far is very limited and leads to many missed opportunities. It aimed as well to bring together motivated young youth workers and in guiding them in getting active and in contributing as Active European Citizens to a more accessible Europe. As regards the needs of the indirect beneficiaries group of young refugees, mobility4U(s) had for objective to react to young refugees’ mobility desire and to their need to be informed on the legal tools to live their mobility desires making these tools more accessible to them, in order to support them in building up an autonomous life in the European context enjoying all its advantages as young Europeans, too.
