Our objectives were to engage, inspire, educate and empower youth workers to address topics of sustainability through their youth work. We wanted to give them tools to raise awareness around these topics, but also to improve and transform their own living and working environments in a sustainable or regenerative way, by enabling them to design physical, as well as socio-cultural (on the level business/entrepreneurship, project management, working structures,...) environments that promote sustainable living. The PDC training is a proven and tested method, training people on a wide variety of topics , educate them around ecosystems, sustainability and regeneration. Also, permaculture offers insight in the cultural and social dimension of sustainability and reaches us tools and methods to be able to transform our environments on all these dimensions. There is a need to address these topics during times of climate change and increasing climatic challenges such as drought, floods, extreme weather and issues with food productions. But moreover, on other youth exchanges and mobility trainings, through dialogue with others, it has become increasingly clear how much these topics are valued among the youth itself and how youth workers can benefit from implementing this knowledge in their youth work. How can we make sure the Youth Work we do is as sustainable as possible? How can we address topics such as community work and care for people? What tools and methods do we have available to design a long lasting partnership among people and their environments? Permaculture helps to form answers to these questions, and reaches us tools and methods to address these issues. By inviting youth workers and change makers in this training we aimed to network them in a common value based cooperation, based in care for nature, care for the people and sharing the overwhelm, the 3 basic ethics of permaculture.
