Objectives

We faced a global crisis unlike any - the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was killing people, spreading human suffering, and upending people’s lives. But this was much more than a health crisis. It was a human, economic and social crisis. This pandemic attacked our societies at their core. Many vulnerable youth such as migrants, refugees or homeless youth were in precarious situations. They were the ones who could easily be overlooked if governments did not pay specific attention, as they tended to be already in a situation without even their minimum requirements being met on health, education, employment and well-being. United Nations suggested this pandemic had increased inequality, exclusion, discrimination and global unemployment in the medium and long term. Thus, issues related to social inclusion remained even more relevant then. Existing studies note that painting, drama, dance, music, literature, photography, film and other art forms provide all young people including immigrants and refugees a creative space for exploration and expression of identities, for challenging discrimination and social exclusion and for fostering intercultural dialogue. Other migrants´ and refugees´ cultural and artistic productions develop ways of expressing the challenges of the immigrant community in the destination country and to raise the voice against discrimination, therefore having a transformative role by contributing to community cohesion, structural integration and social change. Artistic expression can be an important tool in therapeutic settings also since it promotes self-esteem, facilitates the expression of emotions as well as the processing of traumatic experiences. Creative and artistic tools in therapies offer the means for refugees to explore, express and reconstruct their emotions and experiences related to conflict, violence and exile. The project “Achieving Social Inclusion through Culture and Art” aimed to create a platform where young people experienced and practiced artistic and cultural communication that leads to social inclusion and became change agents in their local communities in general and among refugees/asylum seekers and migrant communities in particular. This project consisted of 3 Phases and encompassed 2 Youth Exchange Activities (A1 and A2) Phase #1: Youth Exchange A1 in Yerevan, Armenia (6-15 August 2022): 32 young people from 4 countries (Greece, Armenia, Georgia and Italy) gathered in Armenia and reached the following objectives; -Improved intercultural competences and integration of young people through cultural and artistic expression. -Empowered participants to engage in their communities through artistic and cultural activities (e.g. Local Inclusion Clubs in Phase #2) that foster dialogue and mutual understanding -Analyzed the current situation and risks facing young people today, particularly young people among refugees/asylum seekers and migrants. -Explored the concept and root causes of radicalization and extremism among youth and how artistic and cultural activities can help alleviate the problem and guide people towards harmony and inclusion. -Decided themes, topics and methods of the Youth Exchange Activity A2. Phase #2: Participants piloted and facilitated “Local Inclusion Clubs” giving disadvantaged youth the opportunity to experience and practice artistic and cultural dialogue activities in local communities. The network of 4 clubs reached disadvantaged youth and prepared the ground for Phase #3. Phase #3: Youth Exchange A2 in Megara, Greece (3-10 December 2022) 32 participants gathered in Greece and reached the following objectives; -Practiced promoting common European values of tolerance, pluralism, non-discrimination, justice, solidarity and democracy though artistic and cultural expression. -Shared good practices from Phase #2 (Local Inclusion Clubs) in fighting extremism and radicalization though art and cultural activities. -Equipped participants with knowledge and skills in the field of project management in order to enable them to develop quality youth projects. -Developed social inclusion projects for young people with fewer opportunities from refugees/ asylum seekers and migrants backgrounds based on artistic and cultural communication to be applied under Erasmus + Programme -Promoted Erasmus + Programme and explained how young people can be involved in it. -Transferred knowledge and skills through developing and publishing online the booklet “Artistic and Cultural Dialogue for Social Inclusion” The Youth Exchange was based on non-formal learning methods and principles, self-reflection, intercultural communication, artistic expression (including painting, drama, dance, music, literature, photography), cultural submersion (using the DIVE Model), group discussions, interactive presentations, participant-led workshops, etc.
