When talking about leadership, many programs developed by youth nonprofits and youth workers focuses on the how-to’s of leadership: how to lead a group of young people, how to influence others, how to make others follow them. There is an external focus on leadership with the hidden assumption that leadership is directed outwards. Then why do some youth workers manage to motivate a group and others not at all? For what reasons can some groups go on day-long hikes and camp out under the stars while others can hardly be coaxed into following a few hours workshop? To identify key personal characteristics, explore aspects of effective inner leadership, the roots of inner leadership in youth work, how the youth workers adjust and create their “inner compass” that empower them in this work area, Xano Channel and the 8 partners have conducted in August 2019 an online survey on the topic “Leadership in youth work” on 157 youth workers active in Ideas Ark community (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ideasarkcommunity/) In this, we have introduced specific questions connected to the youth workers: mission, past performance, needs and difficulties they encounter, which are their saboteurs, but also if they have access to similar learning opportunities in their communities. Based on the results of the initial research , 86 respondents consider that “before you decide to lead others, learn to lead yourself well” and 68% of them think that “if you are authentic, enthusiastic about your work and youth programs, the beneficiaries will feel ” and 87% want to “be good leaders and improve their leadership skills, have a clear vision and goals, be able to lead a team,'' while 58% want to perform better, feel less stressed and to be able to improve their relationships with the young people. Inner leadership and positive intelligence training can be key to growing nonprofit core competencies among youth workers and volunteers alike. This type of project can create a team that will better serve an organization and help them meet their goals. Good leadership is rooted in the ability to achieve growing and sustaining the engagement of people from organizations to accomplish something extraordinary together for their communities. "YOUNGERSHIP" is a 3 phases project (1 - find the inner leader, 2 - Become a better leader, 3 - Lead the future) which aim the professional development of 27 youth workers (skills, knowledge and tools) from 9 European Youth Non-profits to become effective and positive leaders of their organizations and exchange good practices on leadership through 1 intensive training course to be organized in July 2021. The specific objectives: SO1: 9 Youth NGOs and 27 youth workers will develop and promote a digital set of “100 Inner Leadership & Positive Intelligence Action Cards” (which contains NFE methods, step-by-step activities, tips & tricks on the topic, in English language) for Youth NGOs who want to guide the youth workers to develop their inner leadership (by September 2021) SO2: 27 youth workers will develop and implement simultaneously a multi-city event “27-in-1day” for 270 young people from 9 local communities, based on their small-projects developed during the TC. The project align to 2019 program priority by equipping 27 youth workers with competences (during the mobility) and methods (100 Inner Leadership & Positive Intelligence Action Cards) for their professional development, needed for transferring a common fundamental value - inner leadership, which is “all about being true to yourself and doing what you need to do because it is right for you." If the Inner Leader truly honors and values him or herself, then they will honor and value others as well. In this way, the youth workers are prepared to lead youth individuals or groups in their development or learning process, including by using the tool (action cards to be developed) Horizontal priorities: During the training course, each youth worker will develop a micro-action that can be developed during the “27-in-1day” multi-city event that stimulates the development of social and civic competences and encourages at the same time the youth that attends the event to take action and be active in their communities, become inner leaders. The tool and awareness campaign encourage the future cooperation of the partner NGO on relevant topics connected with the well-being and inner leadership of youth workers, that can be further on transferred to young people. Youth field priorities: Through the TC and local actions, 9 NGOs support its youth workers to develop and share effective methods that can be used further on in their work.
