Objectives

The "Camino de Santiago", known in English as the Way of Saint James, is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the saint are buried. Many follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. The Routes of Northern Spain are the courses listed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Our Youth Exchange proposal will focus on The “Winter Way” to Santiago de Compostela, which is one of the routes that is emerging with more force during the last years. This route crosses the Bierzo region and continues through Valdeorras region when entering Galicia, thus avoiding the ascent towards the cold mountains of Os Ancares, where the main route of the Camino de Santiago (French Way) passes. That is why it used to be used during the winter by pilgrims, and that's where its name comes from. The governments and regional organizations of our country are betting on making this route known and providing it with the necessary infrastructure, lodges and services for the traveler. This is especially important to avoid the overcrowding of the French Way, which receives more tourists every year and the forecasts do not stop increasing. That is why we want, using the own facilities of the Camino, to propose a multicultural meeting in which to create a critical look and provide new solutions and points of view for the Camino de Santiago in accordance with the philosophy and original values of this experience, full of culture, history, religion and mysticism. We want to carry out this project because the Winter Way is one of the greatest cultural and social jewels that Spain has. Let's say it is the oldest cultural exchange that we have in our nation, implicitly involving all the values that it entails. Because we already had all the workshops and activities planned and organized for this summer 2020 for the project "In the shoes of a pilgrim: a claim for a sustainable tourism" (it could not be done due to covid19), we consider it a good opportunity to take advantage of all the time and effort invested and apply it for a new exchange. In addition to considering the best way to carry out a Youth Exchange within another exchange itself, this time we wanted to show the participants the life of a pilgrim from their own perspective, hence this time we are changing our accommodation spots in different pilgrim hostels so that they will walk some parts of the way. We are aware that a big group (20 people) is a tough logistics organization and some of the participants are not that sportive or they have some disability, so that, we plan to switch the accommodation 3 times to enjoy just the first stage of the Winter Way (Ponferrada - Las Médulas) but in three small walks. In this manner, instead of walking for 8/9 hours in this first stage straight away (almost 30km) we will walk just for 3 hours per day (around 10km) during these days that we are changing the pilgrim spot. Our main objectives with the project “The Winter Way - Xacobeo21” are: • Value the material and intangible heritage of our region and the unknown Winter Way to Santiago that crosses it • Foster a critical look with the emerging tourism model that we want to build in the future of our region, based on the defense of heritage, respect for nature and thought to be sustainable • Share cultural values linked to the pilgrim's experience, discuss and share what the traveler or immigrant brings to the local culture and vice versa • To reinforce understanding and interest in other cultures and their views, basic concepts and peculiarities through intercultural learning • To promote positive and respectful attitudes toward various cultures, people and their specialty • To increase levels of tolerance, peace and cooperation. To create strong, lifelong connections among the participants by deep understanding and sharing cultures Because the other YE that we are going to do in August 2021 will be in the Valdeorras´stages of the Winter Way, this time we chose the first stage that corresponds to the old Galician area: El Bierzo. Many of the population of this region still consider themselves Galicians despite the fact that they officially belong to the province of León, however, many schools continue to teach their classes in the Galician language. Moreover, we consider that our neighbors, who also have the majority of the population elderly, also need a bit of youth impact in the area. In addition, the fact this time to carry out a cultural exchange on the Camino de Santiago itself, we consider that this stage is the most beautiful in terms of nature, contrast between the natural and the exploited by the human being (Las médulas - ancient Roman mines of gold) and a lot of cultural value thanks to the Cornatel castle built between the 9th-16th
