Project summary

The partners work in communities that have not host adequately yet the immigrant population, with separate and in some cases exclusive socialization environments. We work with young people of migrant origin who find it very difficult to be part of their communities on equal terms with other young people. Young people who do not access, for various reasons, the services of their area, the youth activities that are offered. With this reality, we set a project with two complementary objectives: - Promote social inclusion, citizen coexistence and the participation of young immigrants in the social, political, economic and cultural life of our regions. - Prevent discriminatory, racist and xenophobic behavior in the local population, especially the youth, through the normalization of the presence of migrant identities in community life. To meet our objectives we are going to implement an analysis of the personal interests and needs in relation to their community integration of the young people of migrant origin with whom we work, developing a training plan for these young people in social and communication competences, cultural context and initiative. On this basis, we will work to increase the participation of young people of migrant origin in community activities under equal conditions, as well as to produce an improvement in the social perception of young people of migrant origin and to bring them closer to their realities. Finally, we will prepare materials with recommendations and ideas to facilitate and promote the inclusion of young people of migrant origin in their host communities and we will share the results of everything we have learned. In this process we are going to involve more than 500 young people (13 to 30 years old) of very diverse profiles from all our communities, but especially around 40 young people of migrant origin who will be the center of the project. The entire process and the actions that are developed will be based on non-formal education, an active and participatory methodology that adapts to the specific and real needs of people, attractive and effective to achieve our objectives. In the end we hope to improve the inclusion in community life of young people of migrant origin.

Objectives

When presenting the project, we primarily expected two things to happen: That young immigrants would increase their presence and participation in community activities (of any type: sports, cultural, political, etc., based on their interests and needs). For this, they needed a training process to empower them for equal and quality participation. That the community would normalize and include the migrant population (mainly youth) and their realities in its standard dynamics, which implies the elimination of discriminatory behaviors among the population. This has been a lengthy and progressive process (hence the duration of this project, which, despite being small, required many months for its proper execution), with advancements and possibly setbacks. However, once initiated, it generated autonomous dynamics that have persisted over time even after the project's completion. More young people of migrant origin have actively participated in their communities. Increased presence has reinforced changes in mentality within the population. Greater presence has led to greater change.

Background

The partner organizations focused on the integration of young migrants into communities that often excluded them. The project had two clear objectives: Promote social inclusion, civic coexistence, and the participation of young immigrants in various aspects of local life, such as social, political, economic, and cultural spheres. Work on preventing discriminatory, racist, and xenophobic behaviors, especially among the local youth population, by normalizing the presence of migrant identities in community life. To achieve these goals, a comprehensive analysis of the interests and needs of young migrants was carried out, and a training plan in social skills, communication, cultural context, and initiative was implemented. Active participation of young people in community activities on equal terms was encouraged, and efforts were made to improve their social perception by getting closer to their realities. The project involved more than 500 young people of various ages and backgrounds, with the participation of around 40 young migrants as the core group.
