Objectives

Mental disorders are one of the greatest public health challenges in the European Region as measured by prevalence, burden of disease and disability. Mental health problems, including depression, anxiety and schizophrenia, are the main cause of disability and early retirement in many countries and a major burden to economies, demanding policy action, according to the European Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 report. Mental health disorders are also more common among young people. Yet, there is a lot of stigma about mental health in many societies - the idea that "it is all in your head" or that you are "crazy". Also, the schooling system mostly does not address the growing needs of young people to protect their mental health. In fact, with more pressures to perform as excellent students, excel in extracurricular activities (e.g. sports or arts) and being active participant in your community (e.g. through volunteering), the expectations from modern teenagers are becoming ever greater, and the schooling system is one of the factors contributing to accumulating stress and anxiety in young people. In this youth exchange we want to focus on three issues: 1. breaking stigma around mental health 2. create foundations for long-term mental health 3. provide young people with skills to take care of their mental health in everyday life.
