Objectives

Project goal was to promote diversity and facilitate intercultural dialogue between young people, raise the level of interculturality of young participants. Project goal was achieved by familiarizing young participants with localization marketing and creating contexts where they could practice it, discovering how and why it is being adapted to different cultures, how cultures are different and why. We had 3 project objectives which were reached: 1. Created safe non-formal environment where young participants felt comfortable to expose themselves to diversity of people and their differences, experience other cultures and learn from each other. 2. Familiarized young participants with marketing strategy localization and together discovered through practice how and why the same product could be advertised differently in various cultures considering its traditions, language, customs. 3. Raised cultural awareness of young participants through localization marketing which was achieved by understanding how culture where the person grew up (language, traditions and history) shapes and affects many areas – from marketing to personalities and behaviors. With this project we wanted to raise intercultural awareness and tolerance. It seems that with the wide access to information and available opportunities to travel, young people should have high level of intercultural awareness. However, this access seems to be double edged sword – it is difficult to sort out information, people often believe what they see which is not necessarily true and build their opinion about people from other cultures from not completely reliable information. People are also getting inpatient, less tolerant and understanding towards each other in real life, have difficulties to accept that someone may think or is different. People are losing empathy towards each other, blindly believe what we see online about other cultures and start to create opinion based on that rather than their own experiences. After discussing these issues with young people and partners we decided to organize a project where young participants would have a chance to expose themselves to diversity, gain experience and form opinions of their own. As way to increase interculturality we chose specific topic localization marketing through which young participants saw how cultures are different, what customs, traditions and habits each culture had, how it affects people and their lives and why. Localization marketing is marketing type which focus on adaptation/advertising of product or service taking into account cultural differences of countries like geographics, demographics, beliefs, opinions, habits, traditions, history and experiences. By familiarizing with localization marketing, analyzing advertising campaigns of products/services existing in partner countries and discovering how they were adapted to participants cultures, learning reasons behind that young participants also understood better how different they are and why. For instance, why Tesco or Lidl shops have different Christmas campaigns and even products in partner countries; why IKEA websites differ, etc.
