Objectives

To develop the "NoHateSpeech" project, the partners associations started from the complex phenomenon of social media and its worst aspect, ie the hate speech online. Young people risk being more exposed due to their massive use of social media and the scarcity (or lack) of situations in which to become aware of hate speech. The focus point of this phenomenon concerns not only the side of the victim but also the young person who, not aware of the negative (and/or destructive) value of his words, can become the author of actions in violation of human rights. By implementing the project, the aim was to counter incitement to hate speech online (and consequently also offline) in all its forms, including those that most affect young people, such as intimidation and discrimination. The objective has also been expanded to include other focuses such as raising awareness on the issue of incitement to online hate speech and the risks it represents for democracy and for young people, promotion of media and internet education; encouraging young people to defend human rights through concrete and direct actions; creating a network of online activists for human rights; map hate speech online and develop tools to combat it. During the project these concepts were internalized by the participants who, precisely by virtue of a theme that concerns them closely and which see them as direct and frontline protagonists, were enhanced by aspects that a normal user does not perceive or identifies as a source of hate. For example, the reference to "idioms", the use of juvenile terms or juvenile slang, acronyms or words in other languages. In fact, forms of hate or violence have also been identified in the use of some emoticon or gif, which can mask forms of violence equally dangerous.
