Objectives

The "EMUN + (E) leMenti Urbani Naturali Plus" project was conceived by some young members of the Arts in Rome association who share an interest in art and their city. These are young people active in the redevelopment of urban suburbs, who have felt the need to interact with other peers to promote more ethical cities, encouraging the active participation of other young people in the social and cultural life of urban centers. EMUN + was in fact created to promote a reflection on the values related to active citizenship and how these values represent an essential element to counter and prevent the onset of phenomena of social marginalization and urban degradation. As analyzed by the 2016 European Urban Agenda, Europe is a continent characterized by a high degree of urbanization: about half of the population currently lives in urban areas with more than 50,000 inhabitants. Cities play a fundamental role in the social, economic and cultural life of Europe as the main engines of economic growth. At the same time, however, they suffer, in the urban peripheries, from the most serious problems that afflict modern society (including degradation and marginalization). In this context, young people are often one of the most penalized categories, finding themselves living not only in areas with low economic and employment potential, but also in reality with an absent playful cultural offer. The resolution of the problems linked to social exclusion and urban decay therefore represents a European challenge, which needs to be tackled globally, also taking into account that young people themselves (victims of such critical situations) can, if adequately involved and educated to active citizenship represent the solution to the problem. It is no coincidence that in Europe there have already been some youth initiatives carried out at the local level to revitalize some urban areas and to transform areas of severe degradation into places of confrontation and dialogue with others in which inspiration and creativity can be expressed. EMUN + was inspired by these stories with the intention of making its own personal contribution in combating urban decay by promoting the active participation of young people. To achieve these objectives, EMUN + has provided for the involvement of a total of 36 young people from 6 different countries, who are confronted precisely on the issues of urban redevelopment and art, through the creation of workshops and learning by doing activities including the creation of environmental themed murals. EMUN + compared to the 36 participants achieved the following objectives: - stimulated their creativity, teaching them to exploit it for the benefit of the community in which they live; - the children got used to confronting each other in a multicultural environment, learning to respect and value diversity; - have learned to plan and work side by side thanks to active listening to others and developing ideas in a group; - Their self-esteem has certainly grown by highlighting the abilities of each one; - have acquired artistic and digital knowledge, potentially reusable in other city contexts for the promotion of cultural activities capable of improving the quality of life of local communities with particular attention to that of other young people at risk of marginalization; Finally, with respect to EMUN + organizations and stakeholders, the following results were achieved: - improvement of the ability to follow and support young people in the development of their creative flair; - acquisition of tools to be used also at the end of the project for the active participation of young people in the fight against urban decay; - creating strong partnerships to create new opportunities for young people;
