Objectives

The project "YOung PEople for the Development of Rural and Isolated Areas" (YOPEDRIA) was developed to help make youth work in rural and/or geographically disadvantaged areas more qualified and capable of intercepting the needs and requirements of young people living in these areas. This proposal was the result of a long-term educational journey undertaken by several organisations involved in youth work, and realised in cooperation with the European Network ORA (Observe, Think, Act), and was born as a response to the isolation (social, physical, cultural) caused by the Covid Pandemic19 in order to develop practices and tools capable of promoting the involvement, inclusion and personal growth of young people from geographically disadvantaged backgrounds. In fact, our experience in the years 2020/2021 made us reflect further on those realities that are daily confronted with the concept of 'limit' and 'distance' on different levels (development, physical, resources, opportunities) and on the need to use various aspects of youth work (especially in the artistic, environmental and multimedia spheres) as tools for participation, reflection on their social role and socio-cultural growth for young people from geographically disadvantaged areas and the communities in which they live. Through a fruitful and intense work in close contact with the local community (green and protected areas, municipal administrations, cultural, environmental and youth associations, etc.), the multi-activity has created an educational, training and experiential pathway based on the principles of Non Formal Education (NFE) capable of increasing knowledge, skills and capacities of the partner associations and their operators through a set of good practices, modules and working tools developed throughout the project, as well as of involving young Europeans from geographically disadvantaged backgrounds in order to promote their sense of active citizenship through a direct engagement within the community. The educational pathway directly involved 77 participants among trainers, facilitators, youth workers, managers of youth centres/organisations and also young users/peer educators mostly from the area of disadvantage from different European countries (Italy, Belgium, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina, Poland, Serbia). The project was composed of three different mobilities in order to have the possibility with the Study Visit (Xhoffraix BE, 16 - 22 May 2022) to get to know on the field and synthesise different experiences, methodologies and good practices applied by partners and organisations in the French and German speaking community of Belgium (Observe) with the Training Course (Borrello, 27th June - 05th July 2022) to reflect on one's own social and cultural role (youth workers, educators, peer educators, volunteers, managers of youth centres and organisations) and on how to improve the quality and efficiency of the activities carried out within rural and/or geographically isolated communities (Rethink); with the Youth Exchange (Tornareccio, 29th October - 07th November 2022) to realise on field a moment of direct and inclusive protagonism for young people in direct connection with the local community (Act).Overall, the project represented a practical and concrete opportunity to give continuity to youth work in geographically disadvantaged areas, to respond to the needs and requirements of young people living in those areas, and to increase the knowledge, skills and capacities of the partner associations and their operators. In addition, the activities carried out enabled young Europeans to be directly involved in the implementation of an educational path within three different contexts in order to encourage and strengthen their sense of active citizenship through a direct connection with the local community so as to promote development that is sustainable, inclusive and participatory. It is also for these reasons that it was possible to plan future projects with the ERASMUS+ Programme in order to generate further opportunities for inclusion and personal development for young Europeans and their communities. All the results and materials realised during the whole project were collected within some information handouts, dossiers and video - communication products as a further tool for sharing/dissemination of the project.
