Objectives

The encounter between different cultures and the valorisation of differences are basic and important issues in an increasingly globalised world. Besides youth policies for integration and combating inequalities, sports can also represent a lever for social development in disadvantaged contexts or territories, and for inclusion for people with fewer opportunities and/or special needs. The intention of this project was precisely to use sport and games as a tool to create integration between a group of young deaf people, their peers from disadvantaged backgrounds, economic and social obstacles, educational difficulties, geographical barriers, rural areas, and those without. The choice is to promote diversity, inclusion and equity in leadership development programmes and lifelong learning in close line with the strategic plan for diversity and inclusion that the EU promotes. Therefore, within this project and through the use of play and sport, we managed to make young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or communities, young people with fewer opportunities, young people with disabilities in general and the deaf in particular interact and integrate with their peers (not being part of these categories). The objectives of our project, therefore, were to promote diversity, inclusion and equity in leadership development programmes and lifelong learning, in relation to the EU's strategic plan for diversity and inclusion. These values that we wanted to promote were promoted through the use of the two non-formal methodologies that were (1) play and (2) sport. And thanks to the fact that the final group has participated in the project came from various realities, countries and different backgrounds, it was in comparing the various games and activities proposed, discovering new games and/or variations of these games in our countries. Furthermore, through participating in this exchange, the young people involved were able to acquire new soft skills, such as being tolerant, being inclusive, learning a new way of communicating with others (international signs) and having the opportunity to be more independent and gain more confidence in their abilities. The main objectives of the exchange as outlined in the proposal (and achieved) were thus: - The promotion of outdoor activities. During the project, we carried out various outdoor activities using the outdoor methodology that also involved deaf participants and emphasised how important it is to have an active lifestyle. - The promotion of sports activities with a social function. By using sport as a methodology, young people had the opportunity to get to know each other and feel included and part of a group where differences were not perceived as a problem but as a resource. - Respect for cultural diversity. Through play and moments of group sharing, participants from each country were given the opportunity to tell the other participants some curiosities about their country of origin, traditions, typical games and food. - Promotion of social inclusion within society; through sporting activities, but also through workshops and discussion and reflection among peers.
