The project “Talking Through Tolerance” was a collaboration of four partner organisations: from Italy (Associazione Attiva-Mente), Spain (EuroMuevete), Poland (Stowarzyszenie Proaktywne) and Hungary (Tudatos Tervezésért). The main activity of the project was a Youth Exchange that gathered 24 young people (20 participants + 4 group leaders) in Modica (Italy), from the 25th June to 2nd July 2021. In the survey we conducted, we discovered that 26% of responders faced discrimination in some way, which was an alarming signal for us and a need we wanted to address by writing this project. The reasons of the discrimination such as lack of education, religion, cultural differences, news coverage (that can be influential on one’s judgment) have been highlighted. Moreover, the project writing team’s experience confirmed that the topic of tolerance and intercultural dialogue among youth should be tackled, as by working with other young people from around Europe participants realised the value of diversity and the possibility of creating an inclusive European environment together. Team members, thanks to their various Erasmus+ activities, such as training courses, youth exchanges, university exchanges, and also European Solidarity Corps volunteering, boosted their motivation to develop new activities for young people in order to promote tolerance. It was important for us to give young people, who in their age of 17-25 are shaping their identities, guidance on such an important topic as tolerance. Thanks to the influence of projects like ours, we could observe how young people became active in their communities and willing to make a difference. Creating a safe space for participants where they can express themselves, share their experiences and practice the dialogue in the multicultural surrounding also developed better understanding and raised awareness on the importance of tolerance. Simulations, documentaries and non-formal activities highlighted its value. Furthermore, a nonviolent communication session definitely enhanced participants’ level of empathy and thanks to daily different reflection activities they had a chance to reflect on feelings and needs. Participants were encouraged to actively use technology while researching and creating #letserlate social media campaign at the same time, developing their critical thinking skills while also analysing news articles and searching for information about the given topic. Based on the needs assessment we aimed to develop participants’ knowledge, skills and attitude that we gathered and formulated into the SMART objectives: 1. During the time of the activity, 24 young people will learn from stories and insights over diversity and become competent in looking for it in news coverage 2. By participating in the project's activities, they will learn how to practise tolerance and take initiative in their everyday life, through discussions and simulation 3. During the project in its entirety, they will gain awareness on the importance of discrimination and of standing up against it The most important part of our project was to develop Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, focusing on a. Multilingual competence (expressing feelings, concepts, facts in English, ability to interact in an appropriate way, knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and language related to ethnicity, religions, gender identity, social media campaign, appreciation of cultural diversity); b. Citizenship competence (developing activist approach, identifying discrimination cases, participating in other Erasmus+ opportunities); c. Digital competence (critical use of information technology, using social media as promotion opportunity, creating social media campaign and tools necessary for it); d. Mathematical competence and competence in science, technology, engineering (handling conflicts, constructed thinking in order to solve a problem in every situation, using a designed method for analyzing/evaluating a news story, creating workshop, self- awareness). After analysing project results all the objectives mentioned above can be considered fulfilled. Youthpass was the tool for aware learning and it documented Key Competences for Lifelong Learning individually developed by each participant.
