Objectives

'In the event of a depressurisation emergency, put on your oxygen mask first and then help those who need your assistance'. This is the safety message we hear on the plane whenever we prepare for a take-off. This is an important metaphor to help us explain that in order to be able to help others, it is necessary to safeguard oneself. This is a fundamental principle for all those who dedicate a large part of their time to caring for others, such as youth workers, educators and trainers. The pedagogical and educational roles and responsibilities of trainers and facilitators of non-formal learning processes in working with and for younger generations have grown in recent years along with the related challenges and difficulties, and particularly in recent months, in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, the challenges and glaring inequalities have highlighted even more clearly the importance of our work and the need for learning and sharing between all levels involved: local, regional, national, European and international. The European dimension, and in particular the context created through the Erasmus+ programme and SALTO-Youth activities, is our main home for the development of these competences. In the case of this project, twelve organisations directly connected to the group of participants in the 2019/2020 edition of the long-term training course "Training of Trainers - ToT" promoted by SALTO-Youth in cooperation with the National Agencies of the Erasmus+ programme have joined in the following partnership: Madiba SCS (Italy), Unglingasmiðjur Stigur Og Trod (Iceland), Jugendkulturarbeit e. V. (Germany), Inspire (Czech Republic), Associació Juvenil Pirineus Creatius (Spain), Planbe Plan It Be It (Cyprus), Mejdunarodna Mladejka Kamara /JCI (Bulgaria), Biedriba idea (Latvia), Európa Ifjúsága Egyesület (Hungary), Crooked House Theatre Company (Ireland), Team MAIS (Portugal) and YES Youth-Exchange- Service (The Netherlands). Together, these organisations and their members decided to support this project idea and offer their contributions to apply for funding to implement the activities. The project aimed to realise a seminar where a group of professionals met to summarise individual and common learning outcomes, investing valuable time in a productive learning environment to achieve an impact for the community of trainers and youth workers from a perspective of increasing the quality of youth work and training in the youth sector locally, nationally and internationally. The project was conceived remotely at a time when all activities, including those of the then still running ToT long-term training course, were being transferred remotely or were in danger of being abruptly interrupted or cancelled altogether. It was therefore developed and designed with the aim of enhancing and strengthening the skills of the trainers and youth workers who were involved in the ToT long-term training experience during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was, to be precise, 21 international trainers who, after having experienced a complex and atypical learning path due to the pandemic, such that the important year of the course supporting the entry into the European community of non-formal education trainers was shaken and in some cases interrupted, decided to overcome the uncertainties and to imagine the realisation of this seminar as possible, with the aim of turning the experience into something valuable for national and international trainers and youth workers. The "Scale-up and flow" project was thus born out of the need to develop a project aimed at enhancing the capacities of those who work with young people (trainers, facilitators, youth workers...) and to promote self-awareness and well-being in relation to the management of uncertainty and ambiguity. This was achieved by: - reflecting on the impact of the current pandemic situation on youth work and international training courses; - gaining a better understanding of the need for support and guidance in dealing with uncertainty and ambiguity for trainers in youth work in the EU; - providing a space for mutual support and exchange of good practice to promote self-awareness and well-being; - facilitating networking between international youth workers and partners for the development of strategies for further cooperation. "Scale-up and flow" thus directly contributed to improving the skills and quality of work of trainers in the youth work sector both at national and international level.
