Objectives

This youth exchange was designed to use dance as a tool to inspire young people to be more physically active while learning about other cultures through what is contained in their traditional dances. Why did we decide for dance? Dance is an amazing mixture of body movement and release of energy, perplexed cultural layers and a powerful manner for young people specifically to express part of what they feel and share it with others. The goal of this project was to provide a chance for the participants to meet and explore the potential of dance in the following domains: body-movement health and wellbeing, culture and its relation to dance and the potential of dance to be used as a channel to provide support for young people to express their inner feelings with others. The workshops of this project were non-formal based and designed to include all young people that wanted to try out dancing and learn useful aspects of the above-mentioned goals in a multi-cultural setting. Why this project? There are three main issues that this project aimed to address: 1. According to the statistics published by the European Commission, 22.4% of the EU population are at risk of poverty or social exclusion. The young people that stand behind this idea believe that dancing is a great way to promote inclusion and inspire the youth to be more caring and acceptable towards each other. 2. Dance is a great manner to inspire young people to be more physically active and get their bodies moving. It is fun and almost anyone can do it. The biggest obstacle is motivation and support, which are key points in this idea directly related to one of the goals that this project wants to achieve - body-movement, health and wellbeing. 3. Through dances, the participants wanted to promote sharing among cultures and nations in Europe. To target this, part of the workshops of this project included traditional folk dances of each participating country. This brought a sharing momentum and the young people could learn and understand more about the culture of their peers through dance.
