Objectives

Digital technologies expand the boundaries of information available to people when used correctly and improve human productivity, but they also involve many risks ranging from addiction, cyberbullying, breaches, online security and privacy. In order to benefit from all the benefits of digital transformation and develop in harmony with the digital society without being exposed to these risks, it is vital to contribute acquisition of life skills in the digital age by equipping youths with new emotional and cognitive skills. Therefore, we need new skills/skillsets adapted to digital world. Despite the Internet being able to be considered as a promoting factor for individual empowerment, literature suggests that the current massive availability of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) may be dangerous for usersʹ well‐being (Duradoni, Innocenti and Guazzini, 2020). Nowadays, youths use social media platforms to communicate with each other while they are even sitting in the same environment. Here is a double-edge sword: even though this sites and digital tools offer new portals for entertainment, communication, education, social interaction, on the other hand, it should be considered that their unbounded engagement with digital media has also raised serious issues. For that, it has been witnessed that the exponentially increase of researches which are conducted on excessive use of social media and its addiction. According to researches, excessive use of social media causes depression (Wegmann et al., 2015), social anxiety (Bodroža and Jovanović, 2016), less life satisfaction (Kross, 2013), low academic performance (Kuss and Griffiths, 2011), mental physical problems (Udorie, 2015), addiction, cyberbullying, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) of social media (Hamutoglu, Topal and Gezgin, 2020; Hishan et al., 2020), neuroticism (Marengo, Poletti and Settanni, 2020), attention deficit, bipolar disorders. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on their lives, in regional/national and European level. Also we are passing out tough time of pandemic. Some researchers showed that people spending more time on social media and they have been becoming addicted due to lockdown during Coronavirus (Kashif, Rehman and Javed, 2020). So, researches emphasize the designing preventive and intervention studies for young people with social media addiction (Xuan and Amat, 2020). The main danger that we focused on is excessive and misuse of social media. We aimed struggling against addiction and motivating target groups for suitable purpose of social media. Youth (especially from disadvantaged groups) are the most important target group in this project which is aimed raising awareness about the disadvantages of excessive use of social media and increasing the competences required for effective use. Youth (especially from disadvantaged groups) are the most important target group in this project which is aimed raising awareness about the disadvantages of excessive use of social media and increasing the competences required for effective use. We defined objectives keeping in mind specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based criteria: create awareness about excessive and misuse of social media improve digital competences explore alternative ways of spending time instead of social media encourage collaborating through ICT create awareness of cyberbullying emphasise equity and inclusion promote creatively using of ICT improve effective usage and management of their time on the net involve disadvantaged groups and provide opportunities for them to support self-confidence/self-esteem improve communication/language skills, personal development, social harmony, innovation and creativity provide opportunities about intercultural understanding and European citizenship Emotional and social skills are especially important to fully benefit from digital technologies and safely navigate the online world. Being aware about disadvantages of social media usage and having digital competences are directly proportionated and both make people more successful in social life. Also, allows people to combine their digital and real lives, and to avoid mental health problems associated with abuses of digital technologies (OECD, 2019).
