Objectives

Over the (H)edge was focused on encouraging the active participation of youngsters and on creating inclusive communities, through educational outdoor activities. While our previous projects were mainly focused on developing the soft skills of young people, this time we aimed to create further impact together with our project partners and participants. We saw the need for such an initiative for multiple reasons. Creating inclusive learning opportunities for disadvantaged groups is a common challenge throughout Europe, especially as most learning programs are mainly available for those youngsters who already benefit from various opportunities. Furthermore, many organizations share the willingness to include marginalized youngsters (thus avoiding their social exclusion and borderline behavior) and create tailor-made learning experiences, yet their youth workers lack sustainable working methods that could reach and support these groups in the long run, all this leading to one-time activities without further impact. Through this project, we wanted to offer a solution by creating inclusive exchange experiences in which marginalized youngsters could improve their life skills, thus becoming active members of their communities and being fully able to participate in social, educational, economic, and other circles. Together with our partners and other organizations from their networks, we decided to create a framework of 5 main activities within which we could create a long-lasting impact on multiple levels simultaneously: on an individual level, youngsters could improve their soft skills and exchange different forms of inclusion (through cooperation); on an organizational level, youth workers could learn how to design and facilitate similar educational outdoor activities and exchange programs with long-term impact while learning how to adjust these according to the needs of their target groups; on an organizational level, all partners could have the chance to exchange their methods of involving young people as well as learning how to offer further opportunities for inclusion; on a local, national and international level, more inclusive communities were created. Why outdoor activities? Based on our previous experiences, activities organized in an out-of-the-door context are simple, accessible, and can create long-lasting impact, especially in case of youngsters facing difficult circumstances since their participation does not depend on social competencies or specific backgrounds; whether it is walking, biking, or playing a game outside - learning can easily take place if there is adequate guidance and facilitation. The objectives of the project were: - to bring together 96 youngsters in 2 YEs (between the age of 15-21) from which 80% were marginalized youngsters with difficult backgrounds, coming from our partners' local neighborhoods; - to improve the soft skills (life skills) of these youngsters through outdoor games, activities, and practical tasks, thus encouraging their active participation; - to equip 30 youth workers with basic facilitation and game-design competencies (50% with fewer opportunities); - to improve youth workers' competencies in developing and organizing inclusive outdoor activities; - to broaden the experience of the involved organizations with knowledge on how to add educational value to (outdoor) activities; - to stimulate the exchange of methods, tools, and good practices between the involved organizations; - to promote educational (outdoor) activities as a pathway to creating inclusive communities; - to create and disseminate 30 articles about the project (2 per partner); - to organize 15 game events (1 per partner) after the YEs; - to organize 15 interactive seminars/events (1 per partner) about the usage of outdoor activities after the TC; - to promote non-formal learning opportunities in the surroundings of the organizations with promotional materials created by the participants; - to interact and find different ways of working with the local Dutch community through assignments; - to ensure that the evaluation of the learning happens during the project through 126 Youthpasses and Questionnaires. This project was linked to the following objectives of the Erasmus+ program: - promote active participation in society and combat social exclusion through organizing activities and handling simple, everyday tasks within a group; - enhance the capacity of youth workers and organizations in their support for young people by showing a different educational method; - promote the recognition and validation of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired through formal, non-formal, and informal learning; - foster quality improvements in youth work through exchanging forms and methods of inclusion between the partner organizations and practicing the use of outdoor games and facilitation as tools; - improve the life skills of participants by inviting them to experience an inclusive environment.
