Objectives

By implementing the project the primary objective was to enable a group of people with the space to self-reflect, to connect by learning from each other (and their diversity), and to collaborate on mini projects to shape the future. The project focussed on three wide objectives - “Personal Growth”, “Unity” and “Shaping the Future”. The personal growth objective was to give people a shared space where they could question and discuss their most deepest rooted assumptions, sharpen their personal purpose and discuss this in a group of diverse people from different cultures and backgrounds. The “Unity” objective was to connect people by using those cultural differences as a reference point and as a strength, lastly being able to open participants up for controversial debate and perspectives. The feeling of unity allowed for people to listen to perspectives that they were initially maybe not open to. Lastly, the “Shaping the Future” objective was to familiarize participants with impactful action - they were invited to engage in mini-projects in which they had to collaborate and be creative by nature. The long-term objective of this last pillar was that participants became acquainted with what it means to initiate a project by themselves in an intercultural setting and help them form bonds that would last beyond the exchange. Overall during the youth exchange, we aspired to create a safe and natural setting where informal learning flourished. The main condition was the initial diversity of the participants which enabled a true intercultural dialogue throughout the project. The youth exchange followed the same logic where the held workshops would focus on achieving these objectives by deploying informal learning methods. At the beginning of the exchange, these workshops would provoke self-reflection, then we transitioned into workshops that would use the cultural differences (and similarities!) as a reference point to foster a feeling of unity. After this progression, the space created was one that was free of judgment, fostered close collaborations, and resulted in creative mini-projects that shaped the output of the exchange.
