Objectives

Partner organizations taking part in this project had started the cooperation by conducting a small survey among the target group of young people in their organizations. By setting the list of 14 competences that may characterize the empowered person according to available sources, we have created an online tool which enabled us to measure the level of development of those competences assessed subjectively by youth themselves. Young people could have rated the level of their competence from 0 to 5 (where 0 is 'no competence' and 5 is 'well developed competence'). The list consisted of the following: self-control, building own value system, decision-making, self-esteem, ability for deep social interaction, self-identity, critical thinking, introspection, setting achievable objectives, willpower, accountability, self-efficacy, starting own initiatives, self-sufficiency. 146 youngsters aged 15-28 who participated in partner organizations' activities/initiatives/works who at the time of planning the project aged, participated in a survey. The results enabled us to form the following conclusions: 1. self-esteem, self-identity, willpower, self-efficacy, introspection, accountability are considered the least developed competences by the target group, wherease self-control, decision making, critical thinking the highest (but still 3,5 in average for all surveyed youngsters at the maximum). 2. the level of empowerment in youth (or the sense of empowerment that young people have) is low in average therefore the target group may need bigger help in building those competences: better adjusted methods, more activities, regular support. We all agreed that by working with youth workers, we would be able to reach better results and reach more people among the target group due to the snowball effect. By providing the training that would consist of methods which would enable youth workers to gain competences in developing the least advanced skills in youth, we would be able to support our target groups in becoming empowered young people. Empowering and developing youth's competences would give them more opportunities and better future perspectives in their personal and professional lives and therefore will also prevent their radicalisation. We had decided to design a training that consisted of methods which can be used on by youth workers in their daily work. During the mobility activities focused on increasing participants' abilities to make decisions and to solve their own problems as well as developing critical consciousness. In this process, participants had an opportunity to develop the ability of giving their experience a name and speaking in their own language. Youth workers, by experiencing chosen methods on their own skin, were expected to be better prepared in implementing them later in work with young people. We had decided to put a focus of the project on development of individual capacity of young people. We believed that awareness of their identity, needs, core values and ability to reflect could give them the opportunity to grow in their own directions. Therefore we came to the following projects’ objectives: Through participation in the JOI project 24 youth workers from 4 Programme and 4 Partner countries (Poland, Spain, Turkey, Cyprus and Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine and Moldova) are going to: -gain the knowledge about different methods developing self-awareness in oneself, especially as a tool to empower youth -develop skills of understanding oneself better: reconnecting with own needs/emotions/body, discovering own core values, improving own communication and cooperation with others and learning to apply them in youth work -be more self-aware as well as more confident and motivated to implement self-awareness methods in youth work. The project was to meet the objectives of Youth projects within Erasmus + Programme through (p. 27 of E+ Programme Guide): -fostering quality improvements in youth work through enhanced cooperation between organisations in the youth field -improving the level of key competences and skills in young people (…) through increased learning mobility opportunities for (…) those active in youth work.
