Objectives

Youth unemployment rates are increasing and most of us - young people living in Europe - already went through dozens of articles about "finding the perfect internship" or "how to make a CV" or "how to write a motivation letter". We apply to hundreds of opportunities and the general rule is that we keep having same negative results. Putting a lot of effort and having constantly unsuccessful results makes us believe that we are not good enough, while in reality a lot of sectors are missing out on highly qualified people, because youngsters are not given the opportunity to prove ourselves. To solve these challenges the Youth Exchange "Expanding Professional Routes" aimed at bringing solutions to the table. Our main aim was to raise the self esteem of other young people that just like us are stuck in this loop, while guiding them towards alternative paths which we used already. These alternative paths include financed opportunities that are inclusive and vary from volunteering, entrepreneurship programs at national to international levels and internships with fair pay (eg: European Solidarity Corps, Interreg Youth Volunteers, Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs, Internships in EU institutions, among others). This variety of programmes allow youngsters from all backgrounds to improve soft and hard skills to later integrate the jobs market. Our Youth Exchange took place during the European Year of Youth, which was followed by the European Year of Skills, therefore it was directly related to the Erasmus+ goal to increase employability chances and improve career prospects of young people. At the same time, the project was designed and implemented by young people who faced the challenges of not finding a job after university and who felt the need to search alternative solutions that changed their life path and now they feel the need to share those with other young people. The main goals of "Expanding Professional Routes" was to empower young people to think outside the box and analyse the alternative opportunities, while exploring strengths and goals, in order to design a roadmap to be implement in each one's professional life. Young people that are supported tend to become active citizens, therefore our objective was to ensure the creation of results that could be shared in our national contexts and that allowed the Youth Cluster's opportunity platform to grow and having a greater impact. When we debate labour market issues and fair access to youth opportunities, we have to tackle the following challenges - unpaid internships that represent a violation of the SDG 8.5 “equal pay for equal work”, unfair paid jobs and the gender gap, voluntourism programmes which require a high pay -, all of which maintain the elitism in certain sectors, while killing the diversity. The group developed critical thinking to understand this tendency and the importance of joining forces to advocate against common problems, generating a pan-european solution and creating impact for our and future generations, based on European values.
